I wish this belonged in the hunting rifle forum but we have our Canadian laws.

I’d like to grab a handy, shootable bush gun for medium-close range deer / bear. I bought a Stag 10 pre-ban for double-duty hunting or tactical shooting but now I’m not allowed using it. I’m also very reluctant to buy something else that could turn into a paper weight in my safe. Which brings me to these tactical lever guns with MLOK, picatinny rails, muzzle threads and all that good stuff.

I’d be looking for 30-30 for the similarities to .300BLk and 7.62x39.

Anyone care to recommend one brand over the other? I’d want to kit it out with Ranger Point or MWI foreend and stock.

Rossi R95 Triple Black, I think they make one with the Midwest Industries Mlok Hand guard. Its a solid rifle. Henry would be another choice. There is also the Ruger/Marlin but finding one will be hard and you will be payiing an ####### tax.

Perhaps consider the Henry Big Boy X in 30-30. Has MLOK and picatinny, and Henrys have a lifetime warranty on their guns.

My Rossi R95 has been totally solid. The price was very reasonable as well. I wanted the Marlin but at the time there were none to be found. Don't regret the Rossi.

I have had Winchester, Marlin and now Henry. Out of the 4, Henry is by far a smoother action and the fit and finish is really good. Now, that is a sample size of one mind you. The Winchesters are 2 commemoratives and the Marlin is about 10 years old. The newer Marlin/Ruger look great, but finding one and price may be a barrier for some.

It really does hurt to think that a “tactical” lever gun is at least 2k. I’d way rather get a PCC or one of the current batch of NR rifles in 5.56. They probably weigh the same, might be a couple of inches longer and are just … better. But I don’t want to freeze another 2k of my money. Hopefully something changes in the near future and I can just use my Stag as I intended.

The Rossi R92 is a knockoff of the venerable Winchester 1892, which is still much loved today. My R92 has been dead nuts reliable. Over the course of hundreds upon many hundreds of rounds, I have cleaned the thing once and yet it still continues to be boringly reliable. Not sure how that is embarrassing?

I’ve had 3 Winchesters in .30-30 and currently have a Henry BB X (but in .357) which has been flawless to date. Comes standard with side MLOK and a lower pic rail. Also easy to mount a pic rail on the receiver and add optics or a red dot. The X in .30-30 might be your thing. Henry also offers a Long Ranger in .223/5.56 with a pic rail and detachable box mag as standard (but few are imported in Canada). Supposedly it shoots sub MOA. At this years shot show they also introduced the Supreme in .300 blackout and .223 but it might be a while before we see these in Canada.

Marlin would have been envious to have been making R95s ;)

As for the "black leverguns", I know! Who wants something compact, handy, fast aiming, firing and reloading, thats easy to mount accessories on? Eeeewwww.

The Henry X was fun. Well made. No complaints aside from I dislike fiber optic sights. Otherwise nice gun.

When they don't know, they don't know lol :p

I have not seen them here yet. Most of the US retailers are out of stock in the black colourways but have the OD and FDE in stock.

A quick search reveals that RDSC has the ELG forend in stock at $129.

That'd be freaking cool. Would love that setup on a 30-30 variant of a 336 or R95
