Which 10/22 to buy?

Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy a 10/22 for plinking. I'd eventually like to build it up with a nice stock and heavy 20" barrel. Would I be better off in buying the cheapest 10/22 I can find, and mod as time goes buy; Or should I buy a used target model right off the bat and take it from there? I really don't want to go over the $300 mark right now. Are the internal components the same in every 10/22 (hammer, sear, bolt, etc?)

If you plan on buying a new barrel later on just go to EE and find the cheapest one that is decent and buy it. No sense on paying that much more and just replacing the barrel.

I bought the Target model and have been very happy with it. I haven't run good ammo through it yet but I get about MOA at 50 yards with cheap bulk ammo (5 shots).
 
I would definately buy a cheap standard model, and don't worry about aluminum or plastic trigger guards or stuff like that. If you can wait for a used one on the EE and buy it from there ( as long as it not more money than a new one which people seem to do alot ). You can get a new one for around $240-$280 brand new. I would should it, see what ammo it likes, get use to and how it performs and then go from there. You may just want to leave it stock or try some DIY mods to it. Most of all though have fun with it, good luck and keep us posted!
 
Thanks for all of the input guys! It definitely helps out a ton. I threw a WTB thread up in the EE and I'll take it from there, while keeping my eyes open at the local gun shops. I may just end up buying a new one for the little difference in price, if any...

I made the mistake of buying a 10/22 on its reputation without actually trying one. Go try one first and see if the stock fits you, it was a poor fit for me. I think it is built with youths in mind and not adults.

I was just thinking that. I'm 6' 4" with long arms - Id definitely have to spend a small fortune on a nice stock to fit me.

I sold my 10/22 2 days after i bought it and got a Weatherby Mark XXII, not really the same league but still, hehe. Check out CZ 452/453 series as they have great reviews albiet a bit of a heavy trigger.

Oh which brings me to another aspect of the 10/22 I disliked. The trigger was around 7-8lbs....
 
The 10/22 is GREAT.....you can get adjustable stocks if your too large for it and the trigger will break in after a few hundred rounds....not hard to do with a semi .22. They have a TONS of things you can do to it to inprove it and a few you can easily do yourself like making the bolt release an auto one with a simple file and 20mins. If I was you I'd buy the 10/22 carbine, the simple wooden stock mobel with a 16" barrel. I've put about 2500 rounds through mine since May and after the break in period (about 400 rounds which is not even $20) it worked great.......now I mabey 1 FTF or FTE outta 150 rounds which is great for a .22. Also I would suggest NOT shooting lead outta it as it gets very dirty, instead you should shoot copper coated rounds, FMJs. If you want bigger magazines I would say to get the 25 round Butler Creek STEEL FEED LIPPED ones, a little more money the the "hot lips" magazines but they work better and last 10x longer. All in all my 10/22 is my faviourte gun and by far and the most used and fun/cheapest too shoot.

I'm interested in a brand new 10/22 but I just found out that the trigger housing, trigger!!! and front barrel band are now made out of plastic:eek: any issues with the plastic parts?
 
No problems with the plastis trigger group at all, and if you want to down the road it can still be modified just like the other ones. The hammer in the new ones is different though, it use to have seperate bushings on it and now it is machined as one piece.
 
What I ment by that was making thebolt release "auto" unlock by pulling the slide back and then your good.....the full auto would DEF be fun but will also get you into jail:(. There is info on "how to" do it as a sticky in the rimfire section.
