If you were to buy a slug gun, which one would you buy?
H&R Ultra Slug Hunter:

or, the Remington 870 w/Cantilever scope mount:

I would go with Remington as you can just add another barrel onto it and use it for something else. Myself, I have the same barrel/gun but also a 28" barrel for other stuff like bird :)

My slug guns are for bear work and nothing else. For that purpose both of those guns have their strong points.

The break open single can be broken down and easily carried in a pack. Singles tend to be lighter than repeaters, and switching from one type of ammunition to another can be done quicker than with a pump. Singles are also a lot cheaper than pumps, so if the gun is lost, abused or abandoned in the back country it is not a heart breaking event. If a gun is to be used for firing cracker shells the single is the better choice. If a cracker shell detonates in the barrel, the single can be visually checked for obstructions much easier than a repeater, and hot water cleaning of the barrel due to the corrosive nature of these shells is simple.

The 870 is one of the most successful pump guns available. They are mostly reliable, and have the advantage of multiple shots. If the pump has a disadvantage in bear work it is that they can be short stroked under stress by the uninitiated. Bear work is the one area where the beginner is better armed with an auto-loader.

The ultra hunter is rifled. This limits you to sabot style slugs. The rifled barrel also limits any efficient use of birdshot and buckshot or foster style slugs for that matter. Having said that they are pure poison with sabot slugs out to VERY long range (for slug guns) I would imagaine they are good to 150yards plus on deer. The Remington does offer the interchangeability of barrels. I guess it boils down to what you LIKE the best and have at her.

cheers Darryl

I have a 1200/1300, w/smooth bore bbl and Win. choke, it seems bbl's are hard to get, And I really impressed the heck outta myself today when I shot three 2 3/4 Brenneke (PMC) slugs into one hole at 50yds  :dancingbanana: :D  .
I did have a Carlson rifled choke tube installed as well. Now I just need to find a steady diet of Brenneke's:)
As well, today when I was shoosting my Encore (209x50), I may have pooched the scope:( , So now it seems that all the funds I had for a "slugger"
will now go towards a new scope.

The only thing I don't like about Mossbergs is the alloy rcvr. My Win, 1200 has an alloy rcvr and it's starting to show wear (purchased 1989) where the barrel meets. But as stated in my last post, I will have to wait:(

I've been selling my rifles and getting slug guns,I have the rem 870 fully rifled cantilever, just sold a 11-87 fully rifled to friend he used it last year and would not give it back, savage bolt action 110 slug gun and now a benelli slug gun,out of the ones you picked i would buy the 870 pump as it gives you a fast reliable back up shot both you have there are very accurate, you could get another barrel later and as people sugested use for whatever, the remy again would be my choice, just for the fact of repeatability.

I forgot to mention that my I am budgeted to how much I spend, So I am pretty sure a Browning BPS is over $500  lol.

if you find a good used one, your set. I spent $450 here on the site for a bps and a seperate barrel.
