I'm interested in picking up a new .17HMR and have been really interested in a Savage 93 with heavy barrel. I was also browsing the Marlin website and found one I was kinda partial to that is listed at a reasonable price at gobles.

Does anyone have experience with the Marlin 917VR and how does it compare to the Savage 93R17 BVSS.

I really want a bolt gun with a heavy barrel at a reasonable price that is gauranteed to make gophers and ground hogs affraid to come outta the hole.

If there is a gun that i'm over looking please enlighten me.

My dad got a savage .17HMR a couple of years ago. Really likes it and the accutrigger. For the price it's a solid, accurate, if somwhat homely rifle. His has the plain synthetic stock which I find a little spare in the grip for my large hands.

Also, the first one he got had a smooth bore barrel in it! Took it out to the range to sight it in and was key-holeing at 25 yards. Took a look down the bbl and the damn thing had no rifling.

I'd definitely go with the savage if you're set on the .17HMR. I don't have it, but I do have the rather similar (in construction).22 mark II FVT (target) and the savage model 40 single shot varminter (.22 hornet). The .17HMR seems popular and it's about the flattest subcaliber you can get unless you go to a .17 centerfire like the .17 remington, or the .17 remington fireball.

I'm not familiar with the terrain, but I can't see you needing either of those in the smaller pastures in S.O. would you?

I had a Savage 93 (pre accutrigger) I have a Marlin on the way as we speak. I have handled the Marlin at a local shop, definitely a better fit and finish and smoother trigger.

My father just recently picked up a 93 LH with accutrigger, once you get used to the accutrigger, it is a really nice gun but still cheap in the finish department.

Personally I would (and did) go with the Marlin, had the right deal come up for a 93, I would have taken it. The one I had previously if you could ge tover the horrid trigger was shooting 10 shot groups all touching at 50yds, mind you they were stringing, but that could easily be treated with some bbl floating.

If you want a good, reliable, accurate, inexpensive rimfire savage or marlin are the way to go.If you want a rimfire to shoot holes in paper and to take pictures of, get something more expensive.

CZ 452 or 453 the American or varmint. Nice accurate rifle. I have two in 22LR and another in .22Mag From what i read the 17HMR is accurate as well. Hey ! Maybe i should get a 17HMR to complete the CZ trio.

I have a savage .17 with a blued heavy barrel, accu-trigger and plain jane synthetic stock. The cost with a scope, 4 extra mags and 200 rnds was under $500. I have alot of fun with it and gophers die @150 yards. I found that different ammo works differently in mine so every spring I buy 500rnds and re sight my rifle and I'm good to go... I made the mistake of buying 2 or 3 boxes at once for a whole summer and I was always at the range not in the pastures killing gophers!!

I'm quite happy with my Marlin 917v. I shot this 4 shot group at 100 yds when I first got it and I'm not even that great a shot (as you can tell from the flyer)

Can't comment on other 17hmr's but I had a brand new Savage BTVS in 17hmr with the accutrigger, and it can't shoot for sh*t. At 50 meters, it shoot 1.5" on a good day, low wind. Add in a little bit of wind, groups open up to 2". I am so disappointed with the accuracy, so I epoxy bedded the action. NOTHING. Still averaging 1.5" groups at 50meters, and that's with whole bunch of different type of ammo. That's simply unacceptable.

My cz 452 varmint .22 shoots one hole 5 shot groups, with eley ammo. at 50 meters. So that was my first savage as well as the last.

Probably too late now but I would contact savage and the scope manufacturer, that is unacceptable. Even my crappy little bottom of the bbl savage shot good, all savage rifle have a reputation of being accurate.
