Which .17HMR

Can't comment on other 17hmr's but I had a brand new Savage BTVS in 17hmr with the accutrigger, and it can't shoot for sh*t. At 50 meters, it shoot 1.5" on a good day, low wind. Add in a little bit of wind, groups open up to 2". I am so disappointed with the accuracy, so I epoxy bedded the action. NOTHING. Still averaging 1.5" groups at 50meters, and that's with whole bunch of different type of ammo. That's simply unacceptable.

My cz 452 varmint .22 shoots one hole 5 shot groups, with eley ammo. at 50 meters. So that was my first savage as well as the last.

I have had some different luck in the past few days.

Ran out to Russel's and WSS yesterday to pick up a new, cheap plinker to use at the ranch this spring (the last thing I needed was another rifle ). I ended up with a fugly Savage 93R17(wood stock, heavy barrel), extra clip, Burris rings and a used gloss Leupold compact in 2-7x33. Picked that all up for under $500. The first thing I did when I got home was sand the crappy finish and cheap stamped checkering off of the stock, refinished it, cleaned the action and barrel and got it ready for sighting in Sunday morning.

After shooting about 50 rounds through it and scrubbing the barrel clean a few times I settled in and shot a 10 shot group at 100 yards. 10 shots using 17g Hornady Varmint Express measured out to a .75" group. At this point I am very impressed as I have been with all of the Savages that I have owned. I have never been impressed with the fit and finish of any of the Savage rifles that I have owned, handled or shot and that has been quite a few, but I can't deny, they shoot great!

One more thing to add: A little bit of time, elbow grease, some stain has made this rifle look 100x better than it did when I brought it home. Who knows how long it will stay around but for now I am pretty happy with this cheap little Savage.
