Which 1911 in 45ACP to get.... what sights to get?

i've got an ambi safety( wilson) on my colt mk 4 series 70, but i'm left handed- that's the reason that there's an awful lot ofambi safeties with the newer guns- as to replacing it with a standard gi , it depends if there's a CLOVER LEAF HOLE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE FRAME- if there is, and you replace that safety with a standard, , you're going to see that hole, - take a look in the gi manual, it's in the frame, just ahead of where the hammer pin and the grip safety goes in- on the LEFT SIDE- if that hole is mirrored, there;s a problem- if all you've got is just the pins coming through to the right side , you should be ok- there's drop in ambi safeties made, so going backwards in the same frame shouldn't be a problem- that being said, when i had my colt fitted, they machined the hole in the right side of the frame and drilled the pin holes one size bigger as it uses a slightly larger pin -in pin combination to fit the ambi side of the safety- in other words the right safety is a mirror of the left but with slightly smaller diameter pin and keyed to coordinate things-

I just used a friends Norinco "Commander" 1911 .45 and now I want one!!!! I am sure Gunnar at Armco can sort out a good trigger pull and tune one up for you. For the money, a good choice in my opinion.

You may want to consider a fine 1911 made by Dan wesson. Arms east has a couple in stock. Excellent value in a semi custom 1911 with bran name parts no MIM

as discussed, the sti spartan, if you can swing a deal, a kimber, and there's a bunch of others- i'd even consider getting a frame and building a custom- one i really liked was the para lda 45 in spite of some having problems with the front sight falling off - colt is like buying a buick- it's high end and expensive, but chevy parts interchange

I try to be fair though, my bro bought a Wilson Combat, and its a darn sweet ride....pricewise it makes the Colt look like a Norc.

You have already mentioned you can not afford a Spartan. Well then I would go with the new police model. Fit and Finish should be better than the standard Norinco. Sights are better and as somebody pointed out the front sight is not staked. The gun has to be a best buy and will serve you as long as you are shooting.

I have three Norcs. One was done up by Dlask (A1) and the other by Gunnar (Commander). By the time I was done the price I paid for the upgrades would have got me a mid range 1911 from any of the manufacturers (Para, Springfield or Kimber) but none of the three would have the triggers Dlask and Gunnar provided. The nice thing about the Norinco is you can upgrade as you move along. You will not get your money back from the upgrades but you will have a pistol you built the way you wanted.

Take Care

That's the thing. I am not looking to buy a fully loaded, decked out 1911. I am a minimalist, and I do not compete nor will I ever, so just want a USGI style 5" 1911. No bells and whistles needed. If I bought the Norinco Police model, I would leave it as is, as it has all the feature I would want.

Not sure if that makes any difference.

Can anyone speak to the durability of the finish on the STI Spartan? I read that it comes off very easily.

In addition to being curious about the durability of the parkerized finish... I am also wondering what you guys think of the frame of the Spartan being of the cast variety.

+1 for the Spartan.

Mine is so accurate if I told you what it would do you would call me a liar.

As for durability, by the time you have shot it enough to wear it out (which you probably will never do) you will have accumulated so many more guns it will be academic.

I love Colts but I still say the STI Spartan is probably your best bang for the buck on a 1911 with some nice mods right outta the gate without breaking the bank.
