Well I read quite a lot of these forums and well I really want your opinion.
I like the look of the heavy barrel but don't know if it is needed.
So here is my list:
Ruger 10/22 HB $439.99 20"
Rem 597 LS HB $294.99 20"
Marlin 795 $139.95 18"
Marlin 7000 $212.95 18"
Mossberg plinkster chrome $149.95 21"
Savage 64 HB $discontinued 20"

So here are some questions, I know barrel length affects velocity on big rifles but how about rimfires?
Obviously the cheaper the better but I would like a lite trigger pull, and everybody tells me to buy a standard 10/22 and then mod it but I don't like the looks of the standard one.(No offense to any of you that own them, yes I know there is no such thing as a ugly gun.)
My use would be plinking and shooting gophers and stuff.

Thanks.

I would suggest that if you can......handle them and see which fits you best. From my experience...I owned the 10-22 and the 597. Neither of which were heavy barrels. Both fun guns. Both with strengths and weeknesses. The 22LR round achieves peak velocity in about 16 inches of barrel. Any longer or heavier will make no difference in velocity.

For what it's worth, I don't own either of these rifles anymore, but out of the box, my 597 was better fitted to me and more accurate. The 10-22 wins hands down for upgradability if that's the route you want to take.

On the Board

If i was buying a 22 semi i would buy that T/C Classic on the board rite now they are an excellent rifle and his price is good too. I have a 10/22 and it hardly ever messes up when fed federial high velocity hollowpoints. Its a very dependible bunny gun. Just let them try to get away LOL. They (10/22s) are the most versatile with many many aftermarket accurizing goodies available for them barrels triggers springs spacers etc. But if i was on a tight budget which i am i would look hard at that marlin i have heard nothing bad about it either keep in mind you normally get what you pay for. There ive given you no help at all really but my opinions.

You'll never get a light factory trigger so if it is a must you may want to research what a trigger job will entail for all of the models you are looking at. Some are drop in/easy and others you may need a smith to do the work. I bought a savage knowing ahead of time the trigger would be sh&t but I also ordered a rifle basix sear at the same time. BTW from your list I would go withe cheapest 10/22 you can find (300$) and put a new barrel on it. You'll be into it for around 500$ but well worth it and they hold there value better as well. Thats not to say other semi's aren't as good or better its just the parts and techniques to upgrade the 10/22 are sooooo easy to find.:D

I would def. go with the T/C if you want "out of the box" accuracy....if you want to customize and spend money on aftermarket parts go with the 10/22.

Take The Marlin

Have several Marlins, and I'll be getting more. I was impressed with the accuracy. Have a 22 mag bolt and 22 semi - 7000T. I'm thinking of buying a 7000 because the price is ridiculous cheap, and should have the same great accuracy. Buddy has a 10/22, and he agrees the Marlin is more accurate.

That's My 2 Cents!!!
