Which 22 target ammo?

You'll only get so far on certain rifle with good ammunition. I experimented last year with my old mossberg 146ba treating it to a good optic ,quality ammo ,screwed a flat block on the forend to ride the bag's. I think it's best was in the .3,s with rifle match. Was mostly .6 and .7,s. Yes a good bolt gun is a solid investment.

How much difference in accuracy do you find based on the rim thickness?

I've tried it and it didn't make a lick of difference. The quality ammo doesn't vary by more than a 0.001" so it is really a waste of time. A chronograph is much more useful in determining if a particular lot is good or not. Yeah... now we can start getting into lot #'s of ammo brand X and this is proven fact, some ammo lots can suck in your rifle (or most rifles) and other lots can be the cat's pajamas.

I found a Remington Target made by Eley (says so on the front of the box) that performed well in my guns. It was easier to find on the shelf than the other match grade ammo. Alas, it wasn't worth the price difference (to me) over CCI SV. Actually, one of my guns likes CCI Sub Sonic (hollowpoint SV, basically) better than SV, and none liked the Green Tag very well.

I now have a metric buttload of high velocity varieties to go through to find the best hunting round. Although I'm happy to use either SV or SS for grouse.

Better quality ammo doesn't always equal better groups. It's up to your rifle to decide what it likes. CCI SV seems to be the best I have found for my rifle so far. I tried Eley Tennex and it patterned (as opposed to group). Then there's the cold weather to mess with things...

Then there's the cold weather to mess with things...[/QUOTE] That's true as well. I'm just waiting now till weather starts turning around before I give it another go. It doesn't help matters where I live we re up on a hill and it's almost impossible to get much time without any wind.

i shoot all winter and I don't see a big difference in accuracy that I read about so often. I'll be outside for 30 - 40 minutes at a time usually. You have to be able to put up with cold hands and fingers but good shooting is very doable.

I think it is more cold weather affects me. I've got rheumatoid arthritis and my hands don't take the cold very well anymore.

My own experience is 100% different.
I use an Enfield trainer and at +12 Celsius (thereabouts) or warmer, considerable accuracy is still quite possible at 200 yards with these iron sights. (about a 5 inch groups for 5 shots is easily possible with good natural light)
And at -anything degrees accuracy drops off in relation to accuracy. At -25 at 200, zero hits on a big target.
But at -5 to -8, some 8 inch grouping of ten shots are totally plausible at 100 yards only from a rest. And at 200 at this temperature a few widely scattered shots on the target paper, but nothing that resembles a group.

I will also add that at -30 C in the past while in South Saskatchewan, jackrabbits were very safe at even 40-50 yards with our Velocitors.

I also think this is one reason why rimfire Biathlon competition ammo is manufactured.
my 2 bits only

You should really consider upgrading the scope, even if you borrowed one for a bit. More x and fine crosshairs let you acquire the target more precisly.

I am planning on upgrading eventually. The thick cross hairs do make it more difficult trying to Be real precise but it works just fine for what the gun is normally used for.I do have a couple of scopes that would deffinatly be better for this but they've already got permanent homes on other rifles and I don't want to pull them off.Unfortunately have some other stuff on the go right now that I have to put it off for now.

Lol. It won't be right away but sometime in the near future. How much difference in accuracy do you find Canocad based on the rim thickness? I'm assuming it has to do with thicker rim means more primer compound and hotter- more ignition?

The differing rim thickness does seems to alter the point of impact, although I never really looked into how this manifests itself in practice. I batch the ammo into similar rim thicknesses, and this seems to reduce the flyers. Some brands / batches vary quite a bit, and by batching them it brings in the groups a bit. Definitely more consistent groups.

I tried doing this with some Lapua / RWS / Eley match brands, very low variance.

Candocad.

Well good news/bad news on the scope upgrade thoughts. Good news is my wife happened to leave computer on and forgot to close page and I'm pretty sure she ordered a 4-16x40 Zeiss rifle scope. Bad news, it's coming from China and was $86. We all know what that means. Counterfeit. I'm not 100% sure she ordered it but I did tell her the other day I would like to upgrade scopes. 1st I can't say anything ( I'm assuming she ordered for my birthday In a couple months) and she knows absolutely nothing about guns or scopes and I know she's really trying to do something nice so if she did order it I have to put it on. Don't get me wrong it's an awesome thought and I really appreciate it very much. Maybe, hopefully they'll be better than I'm thinking they are.

May wanna nip it in the bud... casually bring up that you were looking at this sweet zeiss scope at the shop the other day... but it's $1300 so you need "permission" to spend the money... and see if she coughs up about buying the counterfeit. Zeiss seems to "start" at around $350 for a basic model. Glass is one thing that is worth spending on, never been happy when I've "cheaped out" on the scope which just means selling, trading, and spending more.

We have some fine TR and FClass/BR shooters and several posters are correct in that different rifles shoot certain ammo into smaller groups. Some prefer Eley Tenex and others Lapua Centre X or Midas + or X ACT. Semi's that we have seen work well with the new Eley Force. RWS has not been used much in our area.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will have to give them a try.

Haven't tried he CCI AR tactical yet. I have tried a few of the aguila and they shot decent but she didn't seem to want to cycle very well. Since I've done the spring kit it seems to work OK so far. Cheap Remington were the worst for jamming and it'll eat them up now. American eagle s did shoot, cycle and group pretty good last time I tried them but haven't tried since the upgrades. Thanks for suggestions.
