I was at P&D today looking at 223s and don't know what to get.I looked at a savage in ss with heavy barrel, accu trigger, internal mag for 689. then I looked at a tika lite blued light barrel, external mag, ajustable trigger for 690. Then I looed at the stevens for 389. I am gonig to be gohper shooting with it. The savage was heavy but the tika had light barrel.I need help from the wise people here as to which direction to go. Also how do I tell the wife I bought a new gun. Also like to thank Phil at P&D for the 1/2 hr he spent with me showing the guns. I will neve goto WSS again now that I know what customer service is.

If you want to save a couple bucks and have a decent shooter go with the stevens.

If you want quality go Tikka T-3.

I would know I have them both :)

.... How about going for a "used" one ? Show the brochures and price tags for "New" around the house, then after that has seeped in, usually a couple of days, tell her that after thinking about the household expenses etc. you started looking for something cheaper in used, and look, here's what I found at a bargain, marked down price !!! Women love bargain shopping, and they're much more understanding or at least less vocal, if something is bargain priced/marked down !!!! .... David K.

How do I tell my wife I bought a new gun? What?!?!

Son, let me tell you what my father told me many years ago when I was about to get married and asked him the secret to a happy marriage.

"Kid," he said. "You buy a safe."

What?

"You heard me, a safe. A big safe."

But I didn't have enough guns to warrant a safe.

"Don't matter. Save your money, get a big gun safe. If that's the only piece of furniture you bring into the marriage, it don't matter. You get yourself a safe."

Then what do I do?

"You tell the queen of your heart, 'That's where I keep my guns.' And that's where you put them. She'll understand, thinking you're trying to keep your home safe for the little ones, and she'll love you for it. She'll love you so much, she'll forget it's even there."

"As the years go by, you'll get better jobs and want better guns. You sell some of the old ones, buy some better ones, and you keep putting them in the safe. You take 'em out, you go the range, you put 'em back. All she'll see is the safe."

"But there's just one thing you have to remember."

"Listen to me, boy."

"Never..."

"Ever..."

"And I mean NEVER, EVER, NEVER..."

"Own more guns that fit in that goddamn safe!!!"

My parents have been happily married for 40 years.

I've been happily married for 16 years.

Forget your new gun for now.

Buy a safe.

I really like the Savage setup with the HBAR and accu trigger - that being said I dont own one :) . The diff between the Savage and the Tikka is night and day when considering how smooth the action is and overall cosmetic quality. Accuracy however is pretty good in the Savage from what I have heard - the Tikka accuracy I dont think can be argued with IMO.

Ok, buy the gun and give it to your buddy. Once you get home have your buddy return the gun he "borrowed" from you last year while you wife is there.
Option 2. Tell the wife you are going to the range for some shooting practice. Take only an empty gun case with you. Put the new rifle in the case and bring it home and put it in the safe.:D
Option 3. Buy it and beg for foregiveness, then sleep on the couch for a few nights.

Now what gun to buy? A heavy barrel will not heat up as fast. The Tikka's have a faster twist 1:8 Vs 1:9 in the Savage. The Tikka will shoot 80 grain bullets, the Savage might. If this is a concern.
Detachable mags are handy. You have to decide what fits you best.
Then flip a coin.

Hey, think out of the box!

Say you had a .222 Magnum which is a highly accurate round (like the .308) and some dude came up will really excellent bullets in 20 caliber.

So you loaded this combination after necking down the brass and found that those little 35 grain pills left the tube at over 4200 fps and hit small animals like gophers and prairie dogs like a ton of bricks!

Well, that would be the .204 Ruger! Ruger, Savage, and others are making really accurate rifles for the cartridge.

My current favorite light varmint rifle.

Great advice:)

My Gf only knows about the " couple black guns, the blue one, and the one with brown wood". The more you have the easier it is for them to lose track.

I like the heavier barreled savage.
here's the deal, taske it apart, bring it home in a sack and teell the wife you're putting it back together fopr a freind.
I think it was thee great Ed Zern's colum where I saw this.
Another ploy he used was to put a lampshade on it and try to put it in the front room.
Banished to the basement, it was instantly at home
with the rest of the "lamps"!:D

Hi Honey! Bought you a present... It's over there on top of that guncase.

Make sure you know her shoe size, and have a clue what kind of shoes she likes. Make sure the shoes on top of that guncase say either Prada, Miu Miu or Ferragamo on the box.

She will not ask what is in the guncase....

well I slept on it last night and I think the only thing that bothers me is that the savage is 10 lbs vs 6.5 lbs. I am just thinking of the portabllity when you go gohper shooting. maybe I am just use to the 17 hmr and walking around to find them. Will the 1 in 9 vs 1 in 8 twist rates be worse for acc. or just on heavy rounds? I will be shooting factory ammo so 45-64 grn.

On a side note wife is in Calgary for the weekend so might be able to have a covert op to put gun in safe :)

Better advice is to take her with you out shooting. Show her why guns are cool, get her hooked, and she'll want you to buy more.

Oh, and savage 12BVSS is REALLY nice, I have one in 22-250. But they're quite heavy. It doesn't look too bad in the picture, but it IS a bench/rest varmint gun. Not that that's a bad think, but if you're looking for a carrying stick, this ain't it.

I'd recommend you actually get two - a heavy bench gun, and a light walker, such as the Stevens 200 or Tikka t3 lite.

the Remington M700 LVSF is a nice in between rifle, not heavy, and not too light. Mine is 7.5 lbs scoped, and shoots pretty damn good. More $$ than Tikka Savage though.

I was reading some reviews on savages and everyone loves the accutrigger. I didn't find too much on tikka. I have a 10/22 mag I am trunig in to a walking around ligth hunter so I might just go with the savage.

Accutrigger is amazing. The blade is easy to remove if it annoys you.

Tikka, IMHO, is over rated. They used to be extremely good, until Sako bought them out. My theory is that Sako deliberately downgraded them a tad so as not to compete with their premium rifles. They are still very very good, just a little over rated. Plus it's the wrong way to go if you want a bench rifle.
