Ok in my last thread we covered the 243Win and its cousins as well as a plethora of 25 cals.
I have learned that the 25 cal line up is just a bit too much for pelt saving and the 243 will not be an ethical choice for moose elk or bear.
this limits me to the 243Win., the 244?6mm Rem and a few others.

What I am narowing my search for now is a suitable platform for this chambering.

-It must be a bolt action.
-idealy I would like it to have atleast a mid weight barrel
-preferably NON stainless.
- in and arround the $600 mark +/-

Simply get a Tikka T3 hunter, it's 600$, accurate, reliable and has great resale value.
The design is modern and the quality of material is outstanding.

I'm a big fan of the Remington 700, but if you want a great, inexpensive hunting rifle get a Tikka T3.
I've yet to meet a dissatified Tikka T3 owner!

Cannot go wrong with a tikka t3;)

I would take a long hard look at the new Weatherby Vanguard series 2. Either a 24 inch barrel (which would be my preference for your needs) or a 20 inch carbine model. For my money, those rifles have the best value, features, and quality for the money, and it's right at $600 :)

Marlin XS7 is a very good choice for the money. I owned one and I should have kept it. Rem 700 BDL is an excellent choice (own one) and you can get a nice one on the EE for around your $$. Rugers are nice too...

Just curious, Ciphery, why NON stainless?

I actually picked one up the other day.
The quality of the bolt/receiver was good, the finish on the blued barrel was comparable to savage. The stock however was akin to a whiffle bat and the plastic trigger group reminded me of a 597Rem.....as was the $80+ plastic mag....not my deal.
Tika, you love em, you hate em, you love to hate em.....

In a word; UGLY

.....and with a price cap of around $600 the higher cost of a stainless barrel means a sacrifice somewhere else.

Too bad about the 600 mark, oh well looks like a XS marlin, or save a while and buy a Sako, a rifle you will own the rest of your life. FS

The 6mm Rem offered by Remington this year is the one I'd be buying. A classy looking rifle that'll get the job done.
