I am looking for a rifle in 30-06 for deer, moose and bear in Ontario. This rifle will be used to take shots at big game when my 30-30 just wont cut it. Given the terrain in Ontario can vary from open farm land to nice hardwood forests to tight cedar swamps which one would you choose?

I know they are very different rifles and appeal to very different styles of hunting. I will be mounting a 3-9X40 Leupold scope on it when all said and done. So which rifle would you choose??

1. Remington 700 CDL Walnut
2. Remington 750 Woodmaster Walnut
3. Remington 7600 Pump Walnut

I have theRemington in both semi and pump. I have found accuracy in the semi to be poor (3" at 100) and the pump to be exceptionally good (1.3" in 308, 1.5" in 35 Whelen, and 1.2" in 280 Rem).

In fact, I put a 10 round mag in the 308 and use it to shoot some service rifle matches. It is more accurate than most of my bolt action hunting rifles with hunting bullets.

X2 on that one.

I'd totally recommend a 7600 pump over a 7400 or 750. Always work and always accurate.

the pump or the bolt. Personally I love the look of the CDL's.

my choice for your location & game would be a Model 7 CDL in 7-08 or .308 with a leupold 2-7x33mm in talley lows.

more then enough for moose and bear in a nice tight, light, classy package.

I'd buy a 7600, cut the bbl back to 20" and mount a 2x7 leupold. You'd be very surprised how much better it will handle with the short bbl and sm scope.

700

Would a 700 CDL be too long and awkward for the bush?? Im sure it would be great for farmland and hardwoods, but with a 24" barrel would it be cumbersome in the thick??

have you considered the Remington 700 Mountain? I have this rifle in a 30-06 topped with a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40. I had the rifle magna-ported and it shoots like a dream, virtually no muzzle jump and the recoil....well my 10 year old shoots it no problem and he's not afraid of it. the rifle weighs in at 6 1/2 lbs and sports a 22" barrel, nice and light to carry in the bush

How about a Savage 10 or 111? I'm getting sub MOA accuracy (maybe not when hunting but still...)

I have a couple of 700's ( a 257 Roberts Mountain & a 25-06 CDL ) and a
7600 Rifle in 35 Whelen. The bolts both have 2-7 Leupolds, the pump a
1-4, and all are in Leupold QD mounts. Generally, the pump goes to the "bush" for everything, the 25's to the open areas & fields for deer.

For one gun, and one gun only, I'd probably take a 270 rifle ( not a big fan of the carbines) in the 7600, but would avoid a 3-9x scope entirely. The 1-4x will do just great for 80 percent or better of the type of habitat & shooting I see in Central Ontario ... but if you hunt the "fields" and openings more than the "bush", a 2-7 is plenty, and the pumps are quite accurate enough. My second choice would be a Model 7 CDL in 260 Remington with a 2-7 ... more of a "field" gun than one for the "bush", but quite capable for both. And yes, I would hunt moose with either.

I've never been a fan of Remington rifles; shotguns yes, but not their rifles.

For bush hunting, I've always preferred either the Marlin 336 in 30-30 or the Marlin 308mx (Both lever and short in barrel length, 20")

For field, always a Browning BAR in 30-06, or a trusty Lee Enfield in .303

My personal experience with Remington rifles has been poor; nothing but problems with them. Others may have been luckier than myself.

kudos to the 7600 i have one in synthetic and ive shot everything from woodchuk to bear with it my go to gun for everything deer bear moose in
30-06 and it's a sweet gun and when your a dogger like me it's not unusuall to shoot a clip full at deer so it's the gun i recommednd for the bush and fast follow up shots and it's more accurate than any other gun ive ever shot
