Never thought it would happen, but I've given in and bought a 30-06.

I would like to try some of the Barnes offerings but know zip about them and would appreciate the feedback of those who have used them.

TSX, X, XLC, which do you like and why? Any loads you've had good luck with would be great too. I was thinking in the 165-180 grn. range should be alright for my main uses, moose and someday Yogi.

I'll check out their site also, but would like your opinions and experiences.

Thanks.

TSX is the one to pick, regular X is extinct, and the XLC soon to follow

168 gr is the weight I shoot. I load H4350, shoots awesome @ 2800+ fps

Hey, they didn't say anything about extinction of the 'X' on the Barnes site.:) Go figure.

Just used up the last of my H4350. Time to go shoppin'.

Thanks for the info.

I use the 168 gr. TSXBT over Varget in my .308 and the 200 gr TSXFB over H4350 in my 300 WinMag. I would go with the 180 in 30-06. I used to use the XLC but TSX has made both the X and XLC redundant.

In my .30-06 hunting rifle, I've settled on the 168-grain TripleShock pushed by a hefty 64 grains of Vihtavuori N560. This powder is so slow that this is actually not that hot a load in my rifle, believe it or not. The primers are fine, no extraction problems, and it is consistent with the Vihtavuori loading guide. Obviously, I wouldn't recommend this unless you've worked up to it first.

Anyway, the accuracy of that load is fantastic and the velocity is a little over 3,000 fps over my chronograph. I figure that is all I would need for a big game hunting load.

somewhere between 56-59 grains will be your load, each rifle varies.

look for close to 2800 fps to almost 2900 fps with top loads, if you have access to a chronograph

Thanks TB,

I will give that a try. Probably won't try to lean on it to much as the rifle isn't a bolt-action.

You know your stuff, if it's not a semi, pump, BLR or bolt, what could it be?:)

Oh, and it isn't a single either.:)

An Express rifle or a combo?

mark k,

Good try. I forgot about those possibilities. But........... it's a magazine fed repeater, not in production anymore. :)

Is this fair? If not tell me and I'll spit it out.

GH gets the assist on that one

if I were shooting an open sighted 30-06 and likely to be shooting game to only 200 yards or so, Id just load it with 54-55 grs H4350 with the 165/168 X bullet, as anything going at least 2500 fps is going to work just the same as 2800 fps.

my friends dad has a 1895 in 303 British :)

I figgered you had some behind the scenes help since we aren't talking M700s.:p :)

The rifle is a mid 80s Browning replica, which an artical I read last night says can take modern pressures safely. Still, it's a rear locking bolt design, not as inherintly strong or stiff as a good bolt rifle. One of the main reasons that I reload is to get as much as can be safely gotten from a rifle/cartridge, so, I'll see how it goes and how brave I feel.

My grandfather had a '95 in 303 Brit as well, it was his faithful deerslayer for years. I thought I would never buy another levergun, since finally getting LH bolts, but I guess I'm still a bit of a sentimental gunnut.:)

Thanks again for the advice.
