Which 300 magnum

Looking/thinking of longer range (than my current 308) for elk and moose which would be your flavour WSN WM Weatherby ect????
Or any other suggestions.

dropped a moose at 400 yards like a sack of hammers with a weatherby 300 mag. Its a wonderful gun.

I've been using the 300 Weatherby for the past 6 years and have taken everything from coyotes to elk with the round. I find it very accurate and the rifle does not recoil sharply more of a controllable shove. I have also owed the 300 RUM. I feel it doesn't have anything on the weatherby aside from more recoil and if you handload it eats up the powder supply quicker. My brother in-law used to use a 300 SAUM. I have loaded everything from 150's to 200 grainers in it and it handled both very well. I also find that this round is very accurate. I do find however that it doesn't feed as well as the Weatherby and the ammunition is harder to come by. Good luck on picking out a new caliber and rifle!

The difference in performance between the 300 magnums is pretty small, so I would go with the 300WM. Among the 300 magnums it's the most common, easiest to find ammo or brass for, and factory ammo is the cheapest.

If your using factory loads go 300WM, easier to get most every gunshop/wally world has them. If your reloading use what makes you happy. As far as performance not a lot of difference.

+1, I bought a WSM and I am glad I reload because it is not as available on the store shelves and there is usually a steeper price tag on the short mag.

P.S. If the action lenght is what attracts you with the WSM, check out the RCM's. They are the only short mag that can actually be made on a short action platform.

In case some of you are wondering:

300 Win. Mag. = long action (7mm mag, 338 mag)
300 WSM = medium action (e.g. 270 win, 30 06 spr.)
300 RCM = short action (e.g. .223 Rem, 308 win)

A noteworthy option for 300 WM is the availability, through Mystic Precision, of Previ brass for about $65.00/100. Not, perhaps as popular as Lapua or Norma amongst the "Bench Rest" crowd but noteworthy nonetheless if you reload.

how about "none of the above" - you've already gota 308 in the stable-the 300 magnums are just 308s on SPEED- sure. maybe they hit harder, but they're NOT longer ranged in the real world( 325 yards vs 267) and FAR MORE EXPENSIVE to operate in terms of powder consumption , cases, etc. and i can stalk that 50 yards or holdover and make that 325 yard shot- if you REALLY want to step up to the next level, go 338 - THAT'S HEAD AND SHOULDERS above the 308

My son and I have the 300 Weatherby and 300 WSM and the Weatherby wins hands down. The 300 Weatherby is a wonderful cartridge for power and long range killing. It has "never" failed us!

Id go with 300 Win mag. I have owned 3 and never reget it. I hunt with guys that have the 300 wby and 300 wsm. There nice too but the price and avalibily of bullets isnt always great. The wby is really expensive from what i have seen and the gains are minimal between the 3 really. And 300 win mag can be bought at almost any store.

X3 with the suggested choice of BCP and Dogleg and for the reasoning behind that choice. However;), my personal favorite of the 30 cal Magnums is the 308 Norma Magnum:D.

Friend of mine has the 300 WSM in a Model 7, which I thought was a short action. Not right? He says that there are many problems reloading the WSM. Think he finally ended up grinding down a shellholder to get things to work right. Anybody of heard of problems reloading for the WSM's?

If you're shooting factory ammo, .300 Win Mag is the way to go, as someone else said. A medium grade shell is usually still cheaper than a bottom end WSM. The .300 Weatherby has more "OOMPF", but if I'm going to pay that price, I'll go the extra mile and get it in .30-378.

Favorite caliber to shoot = .300 WM.
