Which 300 magnum

Of the listed cartridges I'd go with the 300 Win Mag.

I have had both a 300 Norma Mag and a 300 Win Mag their performance was almost identical giving me an average of 3060fps with 180gr bullets I shot everything from coyotes to moose with these guns and used them for appr 20 years.

Then I switched to the 300RUM cost for components is = to the 300 Win mag I just use a little more powder accuracy is as good or better than any other 300 mag I have ever tried difference is I now shoot 180gr Scirroco's to 3380fps and 200gr Accubonds/A-Frames @ 3200fps.

I'm in the 308 NM club. If you don't have the original ones, it's very easy to make brass for it and almost any strong 30-06 action can be fitted for it with minimal investment.
It also give much better result with heavy bullets than any of the new shorties.
For someone who don't want to reload, the 300 Win Mag might be the easiest to find ammo for.
The only downside of the .300 H&H is the fact that it does not fit in "standard lenght" (i.e. 3.340") magazine or actions, but when you have the right action for it...it's a very ###y cartridge.

Well, a .300 Winch mag.
But a .308 is a lot of gun, it reaches up to 300 yards easily. How much farther is there a need to reach? For me this distance is far enough.

and I want the capabilities to reach out and cleanly take an animal to 600 yards that is why I have a 300RUM...

how about "none of the above" - you've already gota 308 in the stable-the 300 magnums are just 308s on SPEED- sure. maybe they hit harder, but they're NOT longer ranged in the real world( 325 yards vs 267) and FAR MORE EXPENSIVE to operate in terms of powder consumption , cases, etc. and i can stalk that 50 yards or holdover and make that 325 yard shot- if you REALLY want to step up to the next level, go 338 - THAT'S HEAD AND SHOULDERS above the 308

"Which 300 magnum is best" is like asking "which is the best porche to buy" they all kind of kick arse for the most part. Im partial to the 300 WM, ive owned a 300 WM and a 300 WBY, and ive sold the WBY and wont ever sell the WM.

If you reload you may want to try the WBY or WSM or H&H, but I think if you look at the pros and cons, the WM has a lot going for it. Anyone that Ive met who owns the WSM said the kick was a bit much to call it their go-to rifle. Though I have heard some on CGN talk it up.

My particular flavour of the 300WM is the browning A-bolt synthetic/stainless. My younger brother has the same and have nothing bad to say, although I have heard some conflicting views on this forum as well.

You can't go wrong with either of the Winchester offerings. Ammo is everywhere, and everyone chambers them(except Ruger).

I like the .300 Win Mag.

70 gr IMR 4350 behind a 180 gr SP is deadly.

With many of the hotter 30's posted on this thread and as most of us are reloaders, once 'we' obtain dies and components, it amounts to the preference of choice. Six of one and half dozen the other. Mine is still the 308 NM, ;)and in a Schultz & Larsen of course:D.

And while I'm changing over to Barnes bullets, my old standby Sierra did well in past, on paper and on game:).

Tough question. I have 2 300 H&H, 4 300 Win Mag, a PH 308 NM, a early German made Wby 300, and a Rem 300 RUM. A 30-338 on a Model 70 that isn't finished, ditto a 300 Excaliber. And all the pieces for a 30-378 that I haven't even started yet. Honestly, if you don't reload go with the Win Mag. If you do, pick whatever flavor you favor. The differences are very small. Oh, and I do a lot of my hunting with one of those crappy old 308's. Seems to work ok. - dan

Go with 300WSM. Not sure where everyone looks for their ammo but in southern Ontario where you can't even hunt with a 300WSM you can find the ammo at CDN Tire, WalMart, TSC, and my small local gun shop and this is a town of 11,000. On average ammo is about 10% more than the 300WM which is not much. I bought some 300WSM Winchester Ballistic Silvertips for $32.00 at a large outdoor shop close to TO. Cheaper than the 30-06 was:).

On the wet coast I've only seen 1 box of 300WSM at Cambodian Tire, and none at Walmart. The local shops do have better selection and usually have stock. If you can't hunt with a .30 cal, maybe that's why it's frequently in stock in Southern ON? Local pricing for 300WM is around $24 a box for Federal Powershock. I bought some on sale last year (by the case) for $17.50 a box.

I like the .300 Win Mag.

IMR4350 eh? You must be old school! :) That's a fairly hot load; must be pushing about 2900 ft/s? How does it group?

Since we're talking loads... I load in my 308 Norma mag with 75grs Norma MRP behind any 180gr bullet for 3060fps out of a 26" tube.

So here I am in Whitehorse doing a few things I seldom engage in: shooting a .300 Winchester, shooting a SAKO, and shooting from the bench! If memory serves the load was a 165 gr BT over a case full of IMR 4350. The 500 yard rams didn,t last long.
