Which .357 Revolver is Best?

N Frame .357 all the way you can feed it anything and everything all the time the 27 and the 28's are the best for the heavier loads. The 125 gr hotloads are no good on any gun it (Flare) cuts into the top strap above the forcing cone burns into the metal and weakens it over time then your gun is ruin .

The Ruger GP-100 is the best out there.
Sure there may be some others that are a little more accurate but for strength You cant beat them.

No doubt, and by all accounts, the Ruger's a terrific gun. But everything I'm reading that I can get my hands on points to N-frame Smith & Wessons as the cream of the .357 crop.

Had occasion to handle a few today belonging to a workmate. S&W M27-2 and Colt Python. I don't know much about this stuff, but the S&W trigger action was noticably lighter... and smoother. And the finish on the S&W was visually more appealing.

I had no idea these things were so pretty.

Who is the go to guy in Canada for revolver work? I have a 5" unfluted 686 but I'm kind of disappointed in the finish of the trigger and hammer. They look cheap. Can a stainless trigger/hammer be installed to make it look better? I'd also like a set of better sights put on it, the stock sights look cheap and the rear sight jiggles when I shake the gun. Can anyone recommend someone?

got a s&w 66,2" bbl, stainless, really nice gun, really nice trigger, also have a ruger gp100, 4" bbl, which was my baby until i got the s&w,the ruger is a great gun & good value, very well built, but...... really hard the beat s&w

Hi there Gunnutz. Mind if I pick ya'll's brains a bit here?

S&W Model 27 6" Highway Patrolman in .357 or an 8" Colt Python. Both pretty storied firearms.

Which would be the preferred tool for range work and maybe eventually competition fun?

What other revolvers in .357 are in a similar category/class?

Western style guns don't appeal to me: Handles too small and poorly located for confidence with modern cartridges, imho. Please don't be offended, it's just a matter of personal preference.

Thanks in advance for your offered wisdom, experience and the inevitable dreck.

Cheeky Munkey

You could grab the nice S&W 27-2 in EE right now (like I'm thinking about) for $675 or offer which appears to be almost new yet has recessed cylinder or you could pick up the Python also for sale in EE at $1000 which unless it's trashed would be cheap at that price. For me the Python has a better feel and I like the trigger setup but the S&W is likely a better all around choice for range work bearing in mind weight, holster choices etc. not to mention cost and not wanting to scratch the da*m thing and affect it's higher value. I take my Python out once in a while for a treat but do a fair amount of shooting with my S&W 686 or Colt Trooper Mark III.

This is where it's handy for a guy to put in the area of the country he's from.

Oh sorry, I'm in rural eastern Ontario. I gave up on finding a decent gunsmith in these parts long ago. FYI, when someone doesn't have a location listed under their name... it's safe to assume they are from Ontario and just ashamed to admit it :D

I've dealt with Barry before for a semi-auto. He gave me great service. I'll look into armco... Thanks.

That's tempered, reinforced steel, for durability. Why would you replace that?

Because it looks ass? :D

Finish is much more important to me than functionality. I don't care if it shoots okay, I'll sacrifice a bit of strength for better looks :D Just kidding. I honestly didn't know it was steel. It looks cheap.

I am very happy with the stock sights on my 686...are you sure the sights you have are the originals? If your rear sight rattles or jiggles there is something abnormal and can be fixed.

FWIW I am very happy with my 686 and it will take a real pounding when I'm in that mood.

Pistolsmith? I don't know good from bad but I've had good luck with ArmCo (Gunnar) in Prince George.

Ok you need a Python. Royal blue finish on trigger and hammer. Form and function = Art.

So, you would install a C. Tire brand lock over a Medeco or Abloy if it looks cool!:D
