Hi guys/gals

Just getting back into the handguns after having sold all of mine 12 years ago. I am wanting to get a 44 and am undecided between a 629 6" Smith and a 5.5" Ruger Redhawk. I have owned several Smith and Wesson revolvers but not for a while and have heard some say their quality has slipped of late. Also, I am told that the Redhawk is a fair bit stronger. Anyone have some insight? Thanks in advance.

I have a 5.5" ss Redhawk and really enjoy shooting it. They're built like tanks and quite a bit less money that a S&W. If you don't already handload your own ammo, buying a 44 would give you a good excuse to start. Not only is ammo cheaper, but you can load low recoiling target loads, or full power loads for ####s and giggles.

I take it that you are set on a D.A. revolver, do you plan on doing alot of DA shooting with it? There are alot of nice SA revolvers out there including the SBH and the SS Hunter model, as well as Freedom Arms, etc. If your stuck on the DA I'd opt for the Super Redhawk.

the newer s&w's with cast barrels and MIM internal parts are every bit as smooth and accurate as the older ones.

When people like to say that the Ruger is 'stronger', it is relative to what you plan to do with it. A 29/629 will go thousands of rounds of full power ammo if you stick with 240 grin bullets. 300's will probably loosen things up sooner.

Sure the Ruger is built like a tank but I would rather not drive a tank. I go for a little more quality and comfort.

Rugers are great. As previously said, built like a tank, robust and fun to shoot. Smith's on the other hand......well you gotta shoot both and then make up your mind. Throw a Miculek spring kit into it and you'll be hard pressed to find a nicer trigger, including the famed Python!

And, for me at least, there's nothing like the deep, rich bluing found on a Smith!

I thank you guys for the input. I do reload and have shot a lot of pistol rounds and have pretty much decided on a DA in the 44. All you SA fans don't need to worry as I am eyeing up a stainless Single Six to pick up at the same time.

back in the United Kingdom before the ban I owned a Super Redhawk, I could not fault this firearm on fit or finish, it shot very well and would handle any home load, yet I see very few ever talked about here in Canada.
Ok I do admit the standard Redhawk seems to be more popular is this because of the price? or is not liked over here.

it's probably the difference in the grip- i've tried them both and the standard redhawk has a "beefier " grip - ie it seems to fill the hand better
