which 45-70? marlin or browning?

I wasn't aware Browning offered the BLR in 45-70..

Browning does NOT offer a BLR in 45-70 GVT. If it did I would be at the store buying one right now.
Browning offers their BLR in 450 Marlin.
I know. I own one.

I also own a Winchester (Miroku) model 94 Trails End (take down) in 450 Marlin.
Both the BLR and the 94TE are built by Miroku of Japan and the quality is superb.

Both my BLR and the 94TE have take down capability.

I own a Marlin 1895GS in 45-70 GVT and have no complaints with this gun.
It is smooth cycling and accurate but not in the same class as the Miroku built BLRs and 94s.
The Guide Gun also does not cost nearly as much as the Miroku built guns.

The design of the 86 also handles recoil much better than the Marlin, I found, and the Marlin bites my fingers in the lever under recoil, which the 86 design does not.

I braid flat strips of soft rawhide around the circumference of the finger levers of my lever action heavy hitters in 45-70 GVT, 450 Marlin and 454 Casull.
That includes the Marlin 1895GS, the Browning BLR, Rossi M92s, Winchester (Miroku) 94TE.
No finger bite.

My 94 year old grandmother could fire my lever action rifles in 30-30 and 308 Winchester so I don't bother braiding the finger levers of those guns.

You didn't mention the Winchester 1886 Extra Light or 1886 Short Rifle, but I think they are worth mentioning too. The price will be a bit higher than the Marlin or Browning.

For compactness though I doubt you could beat the Uberti 1871 Hunting Carbine. At 4.5lbs a 450gr cast lead load should be just the ticket... :)

I like the Uberti brand of guns.
Great quality and workmanship.
I have one of their Cattleman 1873 revolving carbines in 45 LC with an 18" barrel and it's non-restricted.
One of the few non-restricted revolver actions available in Canada.

Here s a pic of the winchester extra light.I don t have it anymore,I sold it in a moment of stupidity, but I was able to replace it with a Browning 86 carbine. The top rifle is a Winchester 95 carbine reissue in 30/06 and the second is a 9410

I wish photobucket would die a slow death. Try www.imgur.com
You will never go back to PB after trying it.
I wish we could sticky this advice. Nothing worse then viewing photos on photobucket. Nothing easier then imgur.com...

If there was ANYTHING around the lever at all I wouldn't be able to fit my fingers into the Marlin lever!!!And like I said my 86s don't bite, so no need.

I have an 1886 custom rifle based on an original 1886 action. No way I'd trade it for any other 45-70 lever gun. I agree on the comment that the lever doesn't bite with the '86 action. Recent Marlins I looked at were quite sharp in that area.

I love my Marlin 1895 SBL. I'm glad I went with the big loop and it has performed flawlessly for me with a variety of ammo. Can be a little heavy loaded with 7 rounds of 45-70 govt. but its balanced and shoulders well for quick shots.

now that's something I should look into! Is it much much easier for a dummy to post pics than PB?
Voting yes to sticky it!
Shirley Wood love to have that 9410 that you have there, awesome!

Once you try imgur.com all other picture hosting sites will piss you off.
They keep it really simple and it's 100% reliable.

BLR all the way for me in .450, but there's nothing wrong with a '95 Marlin in 45-70, as long as it's
a fresh one. I roll my own ammo, so I can taylor the load to the situation.
It would be nice to see Browning do up long action BLR's in .458 magnum. Reloaders could
easily make loads to suit their game and comfort levels.:)

:agree:

My stainless Guide Gun in 45-70 GVT shoots hand loaded 430 grain hard cast lead bullets (BH:25) at ~1980 fps (~3740 ft-lbs) that have more energy than the factory 450 Marlin ammo.
The standard velocity deviation for my load is about 13 fps.
It drops moose dead in their tracks and has never jammed or failed to fire when I needed it.
I braid thin, soft, but very strong rawhide around the bottom circumference and back of the finger lever to stop the angular edges from injuring my hand and have lots of room for the fingers than need to be in there to work the action.
Love that gun.

I'm happy this works for you but my hands are obviously much bigger than yours, it does not work for me and is quite painful...............!!! I have been an electric motor rewinder all my life and my hands are probably twice as big as yours.

When a lever bites me, I walk over and pick the rifle up from where it landed, then the next time I shoot I wrap my fingers around the outside of the loop. The more I shoot lever actions, the more I like bolt guns.

I prefer the pistol grip style lever like the Model 71 rather than the straight grip for that very reason. I used to have an Extra Lightweight Rifle and with heavy loads I felt like somebody had slammed my fingers in a car door. I've since sold it, which I regret because I could have tailored some more manageable loads instead.

To meet the needs I had in mind for its use, I went with a Marlin 1895GS.

It'll handle top end power level handloads.
Nice and short for the handle bar mounted rifle rack on my Yamaha 350 Big Bear.
Being stainless it'll handle some adverse weather and riding conditions.

The only down side, I'd prefer a pistol grip butt stock configuration like what I have on my Marlin 444S

VS the straight stock design mine has. It would be a little easier on the fingers with the hotter loads and heavier bullets that it's capable of handling.

Your poor man-bits must run away in fear every time those things come around!

ha-ha, so I guess 94's are out of the question for love and hugs and dance at your house?

I have a Dec 2010 bought 1895 GBL Remlin which has had absolutely no issues and a recently bought new Winchester 1886 short rifle with a 24 inch barrel which is an all round awesome rifle, both are very enjoyable 45-70 rifles to shoot and you can't go wrong with either one.
