Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying a high quality .45. I've narrowed it down to the Sig P220 Elite or a 1911 (Kimber, Springfield, NightHawk, etc)

I'm leaning towards the P220, I have a P229 and love it ... the Sig is a much more heftier gun than the 1911 though.

Do any of you have both and which do you prefer? What should I get?

It depends on what you want it for, owned a Sig 220R, Had it for a year and loved it, but it was hard to get high capacity mags in .45acp, and eventually I got tired of not being competitive in IPSC where everyone has 10 round mags. For IDPA it would be ideal, but there is not much of that around here.

I have a valtro 1911 single stack .45 acp that I love, and since I can get long mags, I eventually (but with a heavy heart) sold the Sig, I still regret it some days when I open my safe and it is not there :(

I bought mine direct from Nighthawk and had Questar import it for me.

Alternatively, Leroy's Big Valley Gun Works will get you an export permit for $75. You have to supply the Import Permit, pay the brokerage fees and shipping though.

if you already have a P229 I'd say get a 1911...but if I were you I'd sell the P229 and get a P226 or P220 and 1911 :)

Also stainless P220 is not going to be any heavier than a steel 1911...both around 40oz

Hmm, maybe I should keep my 229, get a 226 Stainless Elite AND a Nighthawk, haha!! I like the way you think :)

Is the 226 that much nicer than the 229???

The Sig P220 is a nice, slim .45 - almost as slim as a 1911. It comes down partly to whether you want the option of a double action first shot (Sig) or not.

They are both wonderful. :)

Guess it's a matter of preference.. they're both amazing guns. The plan is to have both someday!!

The grip on the 229 is pretty thick, much thicker than a 1911... is the P220 different? I planning on going to some local shops and holding a few guns this weekend...

JNG, which Nighthawk did you get?

It's the apples/oranges thing. You want both, you need both, you'll eventually get both. I started with a Kimber 1911 and then waited a whole 2 months before getting the Sig. If you can only get one you really should try before you buy. Buy a box of ammo and head to a range where there are friendly helpful gun nuts. Any of us would be happy to let you run a mag through. I like the feel of the 1911 over the Sig but that's subjective. I like the chunky feel of the Sig but it doesn't fit my hand as well.
