We have a limited number of guns to look at, touch, and shoot here in the wild wild east. I like the ruger Commander and the upper end Remington. Anyone have advice on which to buy?

Having shot a commander and regular 5" 1911 both in .45 I much preferred the full length gun for the lesser amount of muzzle rise during the recoil. Neither really hits the hands harder than the other although the math says that the shorter version SHOULD kick back more. For me the greater muzzle rise and longer time needed to settle makes the proper full length gun the winner. Needless to say I tend to worry about this because I enjoy using my handguns in speed shooting style competitions. If you're just standing and perforating paper then either length works just fine.

I've also shot a commander length 1911 chambered in 9mm. THAT was a NICE GUN! It was the STI Ranger if you care. I really liked the 9mm in the commancer style gun. The recoil is very manageable for fast and accurate shots to where I think it could be a winner in various speed shooting style competitions.

In a fit of SOS (Shiny Object Syndrome) I bought a Remington Enhanced. It's not a bad gun at all but it pointed out to me many of the things I prefer and dislike. For example my other 1911 has military size controls that lay tight to the gun's frame and slide. I found the oversize and extended controls on the Remington just got in the way. Also the thumb safety in particular sticks out too close to the back edge of the frame and tended to wear away at the web of my hand. I tinker a bit so I ended up pulling the safety off and radically cutting the thumb platform and side plate down to the trim military size. Now I really like it. I'm keeping the extended slide release for now but if it gets in the way at all or I find I'm riding the control and preventing slide lock it too will be cut down to a more military like style.

Outside of this the Remington has performed flawlessly. So I'd call it a good gun for the money IF you get along with the controls as supplied. I know the Ruger controls are a little smaller and more trim so that might work out better. Or look at one of the similar priced STI Spartan guns before they are all gone.

From this trio you can go lower in price or higher in price. Going lower means Norinco, SAM and a couple of others. Going higher means moving up to the lower cost models from STI, Kimber, S&W, Sig and even the lower cost Colt. For the extra money you're mostly buying a higher level of fit and finish along with a guarantee of a nicer and more consistent trigger pull.

Where in Canada can an STI be ordered? I have not heard of that particular gun. I ordered a revolver from Marstar, but when I checked my email today, 5 days later it simply say "processing"????

Wainstalls on the supporter list above is where i got my STI sentry, and a friend picked up his Trojan...very fast processing and shipping...plus i got a free shirt and 2 free mouse pads LOL

i consider the Ruger SR1911 both the full size and the CMD to be pretty much exactly the same as the Remmy R1 Enhanced for fit and finish and quality.
ive got both the Ruger SR1911 and the Ruger SR1911 CMD and if i didnt already have a dozen 1911's id pick up a R1 Enhanced - BUT i told myself no more 1911's!

as far as the difference between the 2 the R1 Enhanced has more bells and whistles, so ambi safety and extended slide release and safety and such.
like mentioned above i too prefer the smaller version but that is because i shoot left so those bigger controls get in my way more and stuff like the extended mag release then at that point get in the way of a proper grip on the gun.

as to the difference between the 5" and the commander size i was always all about the 5" until i picked up 2 commander sized guns and i must admit for comfort in the hand for weight and such i prefer the commanders.
they just feel a bit better, more balanced.

but for actually shooting in the hand i prefer the 5" as they just shoot better im my opinion.

at the end of the day for 1911 you cant go wrong with either of the 2 you mentioned.
they are not the bottom of the pile and they are not the top, they are right in the middle which makes them affordable and fun to shoot and quality all at the same time.

now as a fella that has a nice sized stable of 1911's i would put this forward to you for consideration;
have you looked at the SAM 1911 from Wolverine?
im getting tired of ringing the SAM bell because there are a lot of nice 1911's out there but for price and quality right now on the market they really cant be beat.

i would recommend you have a good look at the SAM line up before you commit to a ruger or a R1 as you would easily save yourself 2-300 $$ that you could put towards ammo or even another gun. i would use this as an example of price, the ruger SR1911 CMD will run your between $7-800 at most places, for the SAM tactical commander its prices at $450 right now i think.
so youd save $300.

the R1 is pretty much exactly comparable to the SAM Thunderbolt the price differences being the R1 Enhanced will run you $800 for the plain jane and $1250 for the fully dressed and compare that to the SAM Thunderbolt that is currently running $550 for a blue and $6?? for the stainless. again 300 + in savings.

here is a video i made...... 12 months ago? and i compare my Ruger SR1911 CMD to my SAM Tactical Commander (and a Norc), it will show you how much alike they are in fit and finish and quality.

man i didnt realize R1 Enhanced had gone up $200 in price!

kinda really kicking myself now for not picking one up from Joe Brooks when they had them on sale at Easter for $700 a year or 2 ago.

Glock 30, 21, 41 all good choices CZ97 also a great choice and it comes from the factory with 10 round mags so no pins no plastic bottoms.

The Desert Eagle 1911G is the one you should get man. Awesome pistol and its fun to shoot, it has little recoil due to the Wilson Combat muzzle brake. My girl friend love it.

I was new to .45(and shooting in general) and passed my club accuracy test with a club glock 21(Gen 3 I think,) with very tight grouping @ 7 meters. Then I bought myself SR1911 5"(used) and Glock 41 Gen4(new). After 500 rounds practice(along with 500 round .40S&W on my MP40 and G22), I shot both as accurate as I did with the glock 21 which had much better/lighter trigger(not sure it was just loosen up over time, or was adjusted by the club). So, I would say they are all very good.

oh... also the glock G30S. never shoot or hold one, but after watching some youtube videos, really want one.

I own two R1's and a Series '70 Gold Cup. One R1 is plain Jane except for a longer trigger. It has a superb trigger right out of the box. I prefer it to either the Gold Cup (cw mag well, original SwenSafe ambi controls, guide rod) and a similarly equipped R1. The stock R1 just feels and looks 'right'.

My wife has an R1 and a pair of SR1911's. The R1 seldom gets shot and one SR1911 has been tricked out with mag well, ambi controls and a Mitchell right side mag release as she is a lefty. This gun also has a great trigger out of the box.

I liked the right side mag release so much, I added one to my tricked out R1. Keeps your trigger finger put of the trigger guard during mag changes.

If I was to buy another 1911, it would be an SR1911 and I wouldn't add a thing to it.
