I am running a debate in my mind, i have no preference between models 29 and 629, blued, SS or nickel.
Where i am having a hard time to chose is barrel lenght.
The canadian lenght 4.2'' and the 8''+hunters, are out of the question.

Would you chose the full underlug 5'', or the half lug 6.5''? And why would you chose the one you picked?

Or the full underlug 6.5" version. I like the longer sight radius but I honestly don't know if the extra couple of ounces really makes any difference compared to the 1/2 lug 6.5".
But I do like the proportions of the 6.5 versions over the 5" models, they just look right to me.

This one's my fave

I find the 5" full underlug to be the best compromise between draw speed and follow-up shots. (the longer the barrel, the longer to clear a holster, the shorter the barrel the more the muzzle flip.)

With a tonne of .44 Rem Mag practice, a stubbie or 4" barrel may well be controlled, but for us mere morals if you were to pick up a 629 and burn a quick cylinder, it would be done faster and more accurately with a 5" full underlug than any other configuration.

Im only interested in full underlie revolvers. I agonized over the 4.25/5/6.5 inch models of 629 and ended up getting the 6.5". IMO it looks nicer and just looks and feels like more of a hand cannon with the long barrel. It also shoots like a dream.

If you are talking new, around the 5-6" barrel length I go for a 6" half lug 629 because I like the looks, it balances well, it is slightly heavier than the full lug 5" and I like the longer sight radius for target work. The 5" full lug is a very nice gun though and a close second. I like the 6.5" Classic 29 but there have been at least a few stories of similar catastrophic failure so that puts me off it. I'd get an older 6-6.5" 29-x instead. If you were open to older models, that would open up other options for me.

Personally, I like pretty much like them all. I've had a 4.2", 6" full lug and currently have a 8 3/8" and they are all fun for different reasons. Hard to only have one.

Thanks for all the replies
Dogzilla, i would be scared of shooting self defence loads in that small package, must kick like a mule!
What plinker said will give points for the 5", even tough I won't compete with it, the way i better entertain myself at the range is often a start from low ready (we cant draw on the line), and give 2 accurate consecutive shots, in the best time possible on an ipsc target.
I feel the 5" must drive itself better.

But, am still undecided as the 44 might become a pure target gun to try to reload for accuracy instead of power factor

What a fine dilemma to be in. For target work often the longer barrel is the way to go. Back when I was a kid the metallic silhouette wieners were all running 8" barrels. For a turkey shoot piker like me a 6" barrel with a full lug appeals to the eye and sits mighty fine in the hand. Go down to an indoor gun club and rent a few guns - its the best way to go!

not sure why you exclude the 4.2", we are all Canadian after all. :p;)

just kidding. if you don't like 4.2" for the look or the half underlug. 5" is the way to go. My plan was to go with 5" until I saw a package deal on EE I couldn't pass(627PC & 629 4.2").
I am not a big guy at all, shooting for 1.5 years and 629 only 3 times(once in Jan, twice in May), with my handload, both 44mag & 44spl are very accurate at 25 meters(I am the one holding the gun back). I love it.
anyway, you won't go wrong with any S&W revolver. I also just smoothen/lighten the DA pull down to 8.x pounds and couldn't wait to try out DA only, it will be much more fun!

You might like the new 4.2" 629 with light loads. You would achieve better accuracy with a longer barrel, say a 6.5" S&W 29, but you might want to define your parameters a bit more for more suggestions.....

Right now i am more curious to see what would YOU pick and why.
No one can really make a decision or convicing for me, but at least when reading personnal experiences it gives either choices some points.

You know what though, if 6" full underlug would be available used i would most probably go with this.
I have not purchased a new gun in a long time, there is something just appealing of hunting for deals on the EE
My favorites are priced 15/20% lower than new before taxes, and have shot less than 100/200 rounds

I just picked up the 4.2" today from Al Flaherty.

I love the as close to "snub nose" I can legally own so really like the 4.2". Plus carrying it around the club on the hip is also easier to when seating etc...

The 4.2 strikes a great balance of compact and powerful for sure. Would make a perfect wilderness carry gun. Shooting a box of even regular factory magnums starts getting a little fatiguing for me. Still fun though.

Love the grips, they seem more fitting than the big square butt wooden target grips, and much better looking that rubber hogues
Which are they?
