Which 7mm ??? picture of new case added

Well I've been doing some searching on the net and it seems I may go with either a straight 284 win or a 284 shehane .

From what I have been reading the 284 win has a great barrel life and can launch 180's close to 2900fps the shehane about 50fps faster.

Good brass is readily available which is a problem in certain chamberings, also dies are available for the 284 nothing custom made needed.

Do you guys think the shehane would have much advantage over the 284 ,I mean reading conditions in a match are as important as an accurate consistent rifle.

This summer I competed with my 6br and faired well even in very nasty conditions I can't get this 6 br to group any better than an inch and a quarter at 300m consistently.
So if I had a 7mm shooting higher bc bullets faster and group tighter I would be happy with this combination.

I dont think you need any advise, you seem to understand things well. I went straight 284. After trying to go Shehane the battle for reamers and die reamers was unreal not to mention expensive. What you may notice about the Shehane velocities is the barrel length used VS the normal 284 guys. I think the velocity increase is not that much and therefore certainly not worth it. I got Hugh Henriksen to make me a 284 match reamer to my specs.

Rob are you shooting 180's with yours ,if so what barrel twist did you go with?
I was thinking 1-9 twist but maybe a little tighter twist might give a better stability factor .

BTW do you shoot F-open and if so were you at the intermaritime match this summer in st antoine .

180 Hybrids with a 1 in 9
Yep, F Open with a 6mm Dasher. I was shooting with bad primers so it wasn't spectacular. I didn't figure out the problem until 3/4 way through the Atlantics. Held on to the point spread after that but there was no coming back.
 
I don't have an overly long barrel on my straight 284, and I shoot 168 or 180 bergers. To got 2900 or greater would require a barrel 30+ inches and you would be running the cartridge flat out to get the speed. I can just break 2800fps with a 180 berger in a 24 in barrel using rl17, and that load is .5 grains below where I start to see pressure signs, so its hotter than I would run anyhow.

That being said,its turned out to be a wonderfully accurate caliber for me.

If your heart is set on 29 to 3000fps, a 7mm, in the 180gr range I would look heavily at the 7wsm. It will get you there without running the gun really hard.

Blackcloud I am planing to run a 30 or 32 " barrel for an f-open gun we are alowed 22lbs maybe 22 1/2 so I want this thing close to full weight.

So if you are getting 2800 fps from a 24" pipe I think if I run a long tube I should be in the 2900's ,this is what I am looking for speed wise.
 
With a barrel that long you'll get up around the speed your looking for. I would guess you'll still be close to max loads.

With the 24" barrel I can push the 168 bergers as fast as I need to, the 180s just under 2800fps is as good as I can get without pushing it to far.

RL17 is the speed king, H4831SC has proven to cough up the best groups though. With the 168's and H4831SC this gun has turned out to be a real sweat heart. Its been my first jump into necking up cases, etc (spent my whole life on a 308 and 300wm up to now). But now that I have a few loads ironed out its just a dream to run the high BC 7mm bullets.

Unfortunately, running a longer barrel doesn't necessarily mean you will get both speed AND accuracy.

Check around with f open shooters using the 284. Very few are getting 2900fps AND the accuracy need for LR shooting. Most say they are running the 2800's.

Tuning gets way more difficult the longer the barrel and the hotter the load. we are striving for loads that will keep 1/4 min vertical no matter what the weather.

that is why attempts at improving the 284 have started to be popular. And there is an ever growing trend to full on magnum cases with the RSAUM and WSM taking the top spots.

Personally, I would run a case volume that gives me the speed I want without the pressure.

And that is something larger then the 284
