Hey everyone, I have had an RPAL for a year now but have been mostly playing with non-restricteds. For my first restricted I was thinking about getting a handgun in 9mm. My budget is around ~600 maybe up to 700. So far I have been looking at the m&p 2.0 and used jericho 941s. Any thoughts ? =)

Try as many pistol as you can before jumping on one. Budget is one thing, but you might find out that you need to save up to buy a pistol that actually fits good in your hand and shoot well.

I tried the Jericho 941s yesterday and its a heavy SOB compared to my Glock 19 and even P226 and a 1911 we had on the range. Very confy to hold but too heavy for a compact.

Is the Glock worth the exta over the M&P ? IMHO yes. Stock trigger for stock trigger, the Glock one is way better. Glock magazines are cheaper (OEM 32$ and PMAG between 25$ and 28$). The grip on the m&p9 is more ergonomic, but it depends what you like. OEM and aftermarkrt support for Glock is everywhere and very cheap.

For that price, go Gen3 Glock 17 used.
Another really good and underrated choice are the Canik and FN-FNS-L. The mags are harder to source but the guns are great for the price.
Glocks are easy to buy, service, maintain and after market support is high.

As stated, Glock is ubiquitous... The aforementioned Canik SF9 and Walther PPX are two of my faves for starter 9mms. Probably not a surprise, as the Canik is basically a p99...
You can find the PPX range kits for $450 or so, and prices keep dipping due to the pending release of the Creed. My brother picked one up as a first 9mm and it shot great outta the box. Mags are a little pricey ($45 or so, less than a Sig!!) and there are limited holster options, but it is robust and reliable.

I like the Jericho, but my wife's PPQ is really exceptional. A bit more than your stated budget, but the gun is a fraction of the money you'll spend on ammo in the long run. A few hundred here or there on the gun is nothing if it is a better gun.
Honestly, it really depends on what youre looking for.
Light or heavy, how do you like your grip, etc etc.
Glocks and M&P are my first 2 guns. (have the G22 and the M&P9). The thing that I have found with my glock out the box is "i need extended controls". I have smaller ish hands (medium?) and have trouble utilizing the controls on the Glock efficiently without shifting grip.
M&P because of its versatile backstrap swapping, its much better.
Go to a gunstore and handle the weapons, hold them and manipulate them. or better yet find people who have it and try the gun out. Youre in BC... Im in BC... yenno that type

I know you said 9mm but I would suggest a 22 lr for your first handgun. It is very economical, an excellent round for learning how to properly shoot and you can shoot 1000's of round at about .07$ per round. When you bring your friends out in the future they can also benefit from learning on the same pistol before you move up to a bigger caliber. Every new girlfriend I take out always starts and usually stays on the 22 (which is a relatively cheap date). The 9mm will run you between .25-.30$ per round. which might not seem like much but I can easily shoot 500 rounds on a weekend out by myself. I still take my 22 to the range. It is great for plinking, quiet and cheap to play with.
Once I got a 9 mm, the .22 never comes out to play.
My first was .45 LC,then .357 ,followed up by 9 mm.
I've had M&P 9, SVDE 9, FN 9, Springfield RO 9,and CZ shadow 9.
Currently I only have the CZ,
But I'm looking to trade my Glock.22 lr for a Glock 17.(for my son).
He just started shooting my CZ and now wants a Glock 9mm .. what ya gonna do
Anyway my point is, get a used CZ Shadow off the EE, they're on there quite often,for 7 to 8 hundred.
Can't go wrong.

i will echo all the rest .....all great pistols are mentioned .... i think , forget models for now .... go to a gun store and physically hold them .... hold and point them ... pretend you have a holster on , and draw up and extend it ..... try and push the mag release without rotating the gun ..... see if you can touch or operate all the controls with your reach of finger .... if you like a certain type , but your fingers are too short , see if they come with adjustable back straps etc .... fit for you is way more important than type ..... i didnt look to see where you are , but if you are near saskatoon , i have a few you can try and fire .
I have to agree with ho to a gun store and handle them. I just bought my 2nd handgun today (1st on fri. Lol) so I can also agree with "be careful, they multiply quick". Just so happens I got the M@P2. I picked up a lot of guns, & it just felt "right" for me. I put 150 rounds through it (great to have a store with a range!) & I'm not disappointed!!

an example of what i mean above is , i have always wanted a 92f beretta since i saw lethal weapon , ...lusted after it , living in new zealand there wernt many around , joined the military , still didnt see them , joined a local handgun club ... saw someone with one .... asked to hold it .........never felt so disappointed .... it felt in my hands cumbersome ... clunky .. fat ... shoot a few mags with it , felt rattly ... hated it .... a few years later picked one up in a gunstore to look at ... felt exactly the same .... it just doesnt fit me ... do i still want one .....yes !!! ... good gun for me , nope ... but i still love the look

Agreed SP01 Shadow if in your budget would be 1 and done-even if it's not in budget-save and wait.
If I can only follow my own advice!
