Which accurate .22?

I'm looking to get a good shooter, something to work on my shooting skills with at the range. Don't have access to other 22's so can't really try anything before buying one. I'm sure there are lots of preferences and favourites out there, but help me narrow it down. Criteria are:

New or used. Don't care
Under $500
Probably prefer bolt action over semi.
No pumps or levers. (Already have a few of those)
Decent trigger
ACCURATE!!

Get a Savage Mark II heavy barrel bolt action. You can buy one for $240 new (or more if you want a better stock etc.)

You can usually put them all in a quarter @ 100 yards with no wind and the right ammo.
 
I went with a Savage 93FV 22WMR as I have a few 22,s already .Alot of good reveiws on the Savage bolt action and I am very happy with mine.
The synthetic stock should be swapped as the stock ones are kinda crappy .

I went with a Boyds Tacticool stock and a Bushnell 3200 elite 3x9x40

an older brno bolt action .22 LR would be a good choice for your price. always accurate and nicely made. You might also find a cz 452 used for about that, I prefer the american version, but you might also like the lux (open sight) version.
of course the savages and marlin bolts are generally great shooters too, but don't have the build quality. If you've got the extra cash, wait for a cz/brno. Then move fast, they sell quickly when attractively priced on EE
 
savage mkII

Definitely savage mkII heavy barrel. I had the BTVS and should have my head examined for selling it. Incredible value and an amazing shooter. Not really a gun for the gopher patch as it's benchrest heavy but a great way to work on accuracy. They can be had for around 450.
 
My CZ 453 Varmint set trigger 22 lr is a very accurate rifle with Eley ammo it put some big caliber rifle to shame... JP.
 
I got my BTVS for $430. It's my baby. I own a few rifles in various calibers but my Savage is my fav. shooter.

I love CZ's too and I own a pistol but the rifles are pretty spendy.

Bang for the $ ? Savage all the way.
 
If you're looking for something to shoot at the range, I'd suggest either a Savage Mark II or the CZ452 varmint. Both are on par accuracy wise, but the Savage is usually much cheaper, has a really good trigger, and the magazines are much cheaper.

You can pick up a Mark II BV, add rings and a scope for just a bit over your budget if I recall. (there are other models out there but they will be more or less depending on your wants)

The CZ would run you over your budget for just the gun.

Either one would make you happy when you look at the target.

The new stuff has been covered, it's Savage or CZ. I prefer some of the older stuff. If you look around you can find a fine used rifle for under $500 easy unless it's a 52, 40 or high end Annie.

Some choices to look at.

H&R M12

CIL/Annies Model 190 or 310

Mossberg Model 44US or 144LS, LSA or LSB

Winchester model 75 or 69

Remington 513T or S or SA

Martini (maybe hard to find under $500)

Most are made for target shooting and have an adjustable trigger.

Another vote for the Savage Mark II. I have a BVTLSS(left handed) and with bulk Winchester 40gr, I did some nice 2 inch groups or destroyed clays and the left-overs all afternoon.
 
I agree, if you like kinda retro stuff, I'd look around for a BSA Martini, solid like nothing else and very accurate, usually has iron sights for out to 200yds or more.

Thunder bolt you to me have given the best advice to member looking for a accurate 22lr in is budget.
Maybe some of the members that rate the savages so high have never shot some of the rifles you have mentioned and are younger and have never seen the old CIL & others shoot with good ammo. I would add a couple others that can shoot better than a lot of new rimfires Rem 37, 540,541, 581 and if he got lucky and got a nice 40x he will not be worring about getting whipped by a Savage

Not true, my other favorite is my old cooey 60. It's an old tack driver. Good luck getting someone to part with one in good shape, though. I'm guessing the OP wants to go buy a gun and not wait for someone to part with their baby.

There many fine .22's out there, but for a 'go buy an accurate rifle today' kinda gun the savages can't be beat is all I was saying.

The reason I suggest Savage so much? My Mark II "G" with the light hunting barrel can do amazing groups, cost me only $250, and it does these groups with the cheapest ammo I throw down the barrel.
