So i ordered a savage prefit barrel and as I'm waiting for it to arrive, i have started to think i don't want to build off my savage action. I think i would be happier stepping up to a custom action.

I want remington 700 footprint.
Takes remington 700 triggers
Accepts savage prefits or shouldered barrels

So far I'm leaning towards a bighorn origin or an arc nucleus. What do you guys think?

Nothing wrong with those two, but by going with the Savage barrel threads, you are limiting your options a fair bit. Defiance Tenacity and Curtis Axiom are just two other more budget-friendly choices out there.

Anyone have experience with the nucleus?

Rugbydave here has one, perhaps he will comment. Overall people seem to be happy with them, though there was some issues with firing assembly reliability with the earlier versions with the light firing pin springs. Supposedly the heavier springs have fixed the ignition issues. ARC is coming out with a newer version of the Nucleus, which is probably worth a look. Personally, I'm a fan of ARC products.

Bighorn Origin, Defiance Tenacity and Kelbly Atlas Tactical would be the actions I would be looking at (on top of the Nucleus 2.0).

All great features for a good price. All high quality actions made on CNC machines. All held to tight enough tolerances that shouldered prefit barrels are available and can be shipped to your front door. The Kelbly may not be 100% drop-in with some R700 stocks/actions with that trigger hanger though.

The Defiance Tenacity seems like an awesome action for the money. It sounds like there is going to be a lot of support for prefit shouldered barrels for it, a few companies have already announced their plans to make shouldered prefits for that action.

Savage threads are overrated - and I say this as someone who has an action with Savage small shank threads (Mausingfield). With all these actions out these days that have such tight tolerances that shouldered prefits are being made and becoming commonly available, there's no reason to have a barrel nut barrel anymore, IMO. The advantages of barrel nuts are totally overblown on this site.

Also, I would stay away from Curtis. The quality with that brand is very hit or miss, it has a premium price tag without premium quality. On top of the poor quality, lots of people have issues getting them to feed correctly and reliably. The oversized bolt certainly doesn't help with that (much like the Ultimatum).

Got a gen 1.0 Nuke action together during spring of last year. Have 370 down the pipe so far, 120 factory, 250 reloads. No issues so far with a TT special installed. Any of the ones coming out now will be the gen 1.1, with the gen 2s starting to release in a couple months.
