My first handgun is coming in on monday (Kimber Custom TLE II) and Im gonna need to do some ammo shopping... but Ive never so much as looked at prices for .45 so I have no idea what Im in for.

I also don't know what kind to look for or where to buy it. Any ideas?

It's pricey if in stock - I dunno $20+/-a couple bucks for 50rnds?

Most shops should have some in stock it's not like you are looking for .50AE :D
Good luck and enjoy! It will be a fun pistol (.45's are great).

Yes, .45's are great and tend to be very accurate (or maybe that's just the big holes they make) but you may want to consider handloading...some very nice savings over commerical ammo.

If I ever got to a stage where I was going to the range often enough to need the savings, I'll probably do it.... but for now it's gonna be off the shelf ammo for me.

$20 /50rnds isn't all that bad I suppose. Although if I go to the range and squeeze of 100-200 that would be a pretty expensive day.

I have 2 .45's, an HK USP and a Para P14 LTD. I have been buying ammo from Wholesale Sports in Calgary and the Remington 230gr FMJ goes for $32.99 for 100 rnds. They also have mailorder in case you need to order that way.

Cheers

Reloading = No 'real' savings. But you get to shoot more for the same buck...:p

For a case of 1,000 rounds , Wolverine has Federal American Eagle 230 grain fmj that works out to about $15.00 per box . It's loaded to 890 fps and shoots very well in my Glock .

That is a real deal, and can sell the once fired brass and even save more:)

US Ammo

If you live near a US border go to walmart and pick up 100rds for $20 it's Winchester or you can get CCI Blazer for less the $10 per 50.

Local dealer has some Hungarian boxer primed .45ACP ball, but it's $19.95 per 50. Seems to be clean & shoots pretty well in my 1911's, though. Been picking up a few boxes here & there to turn into brass for when I break out my presses again. :D

Thou shalt not discuss thy illegal activities (the purchase of ammunition in the USA) on thy blessed Gunnutz forum :)

I bought a few boxes of .45 reloads from Wolf Bullets in Kingston, approx $10/50, cheaper when you bring the brass back.

If you type wolf and bullets followed by a .com in your address bar, you will find his website.

Winchester White Box 230 gr. FMJ goes for $15.99/box of 50 at both Wholesale Sports and Russell Sports. Shot lots of it and never had a problem with it.
