5.56/.223 is proven more accurate in static ballistics tests than 7.62x39. However the 7.62 has better penetration and impact power. 5.56 has better flatter tajectory and higher velocity. Both calibers are good, but each serves a slightly different purpose than the other.
I honestly like the 5.56 better. If you have a barrel with a high twist rate, all you would need is a cartridge with 80+ grains to gain better penetration performance to somewhat match the 7.62. Of course it'll always be a heavier round, but there is quite a lot more to the engineering side of ammunition in which can shift the purpose/role of the cartridge.
