Which auto loader?

Hi there,

I am a long time shooter aspiring to start hunting. I want to buy an auto loading shotgun for all of my hunting needs. I am not looking to spend a ton but I am willing to pay more for significant quality increases. I am looking for something that will reliably cycle anything from grouse loads to 3.5" goose loads. Lower recoil is obviously better too. Screw in choke tubes would be a necessity. Any suggestions?

Own a poor-man's Benelli M2, the Franchi Affinity and absolutely love the gun, has cycled everything I've fed it. Benelli inertia-driven system, no gas, no pistons, minimum parts. The 3 1/2" version the Franchi Intensity has good writeups and is priced under 1200 for a Realtree camo version with chokes and shim kit.
 
I love my beretta a400 xplor unico. 3.5", and with the kick off system it noticeably reduces recoil. Cycles everything from reduced recoil 2.75" target loads to 3.5" magnum 00 buck without skipping a beat. They're a little pricier than some of the others, but they're worth it IMO.

They say that gas guns exhibit less felt recoil than inertia or long recoil guns. Having said that, I've shot with all three and did not notice a significant difference between them. One thing is for sure however, after shooting a pump exclusively for any length of time, you WILL notice that a semiauto recoils less.

Reduce your choices to three or four shotgun models based on price, features and positive reviews. Visit your local gun store and ask for those models, place them side-by-side, compare them and most importantly SHOULDER each and every one of them. My review or anyone else's means diddly if the gun doesn't fit you properly.

Take into account that some models include shims, so if your aim isn't 100% on, you can still change your drop and cast to your final liking.
 
Choose a shotgun that fits you, choosing a shotgun based on looks or price often results in someone ending up with a shotgun that fits poorly, and that they shoot poorly. I have tried several semi auto shotguns including theSBE2, and the A400, but I ended up keeping an SX-3, because I shoot it better than the others.

We need sticky at the top that says... No more what do I buy threads.

All the thread needs to say is how to fit a gun and to pick what fits you...

I know the forum sponsors won't like it because the newbies won't be swapping guns every season because they suck at shooting the gun that doesn't fit them... But it will save us all the aggravation of the same damn thread started every other day.
 
Patience.... we were all there once. That being said don't post in these threads if you don't like the idea of them. Newbies need help and want an experienced opinions. It's a simple concept... don't click on the thread that says "what do I buy".... problem solved��
 
Thanks for the advice all... Funny to be called a newbie after at least 5000 rounds of 12g going through my shotguns already and 20 times that through pistols but I appreciate all of your input.

Shotgun and pistol have very little in common so your pistol shooting means very little., as to the 500 rounds, it depends on the type of shooting you did. If you were shooting flying targets, then it is applicable. but it you were shooting at stationary targets, then you are a newbie when it comes to wing shooting.
 
Beretta a400 extreme is where I would go. Same advice I have wanted to give in the last 25 threads on this topic. Stand by, shortly every brand of shotgun will be suggested including all the new Turkish models.

You need to stop asking, stop thinking, and get out and get shouldering/shooting several kinds. Don't worry about what kind until you narrow in on a few that fit you.

this... or search on here or other sites... pick one you like, buy it on the ee, and try it out... if you dont like it, sell it on the ee and pick another one... unless you break it, it wont lose much value
 
I like to hear what others have experienced with different guns. I like to hear about the issues common to popular choices as well. Personally I don't mind cleaning my guns, even the more complicated gas systems so if people seem to only have issues with a particular model based on being harder to clean or disassemble I might be ok with that where I wouldn't accept a model that couldn't reliably cycle the rounds I want to use.

With respect to 3.5" shells I have never used them in the past and don't know if it is really necessary. That said I don't mind having the option to use them if it's available. I don't particularly mind recoil but don't want to soak it up if it's not totally necessary. ( I fired 750 rounds of 2.75 00 buck 12g through my 590a1 in one day on a course and couldn't lift my hand up to brush my teeth the next day... I feel no need to prove anything after that lol). I intend to hunt geese and if you experienced guys don't think the 3.5" is necessary I'm glad to hear it...
