which big cal to build

585, you are running some serious loads in that rifle. I can see a 30 inch barrel helping some, but not to the tune of 400fps. Are you using magic powder, or magic brass?

Just plain magic!...Being a #1, single shot, I am not restricted to OAL in order to feed through a magazine. seating the bullet way out for extra powder capacity also helps along with the long barrels. I have also had the chambers cut with longer throats and freebore than standard WBY dimensions for their bolt action.

OAL of the rifle with 30" barrel is still shorter than a new weatherby with their screw on brake.

If i was building a big bore right now it would be a .416, either the rigby or the remington depending on the action i was starting out with.

Check out 'Chuck Hawks' site..REAL GUNS on the web. He has complete data on developing and building a 358/378!..In the final analysis it doesn't appear to deliver much more than the 338/378, and the .338 version has better bullet selection with higher ballistic coeffecients for long range,
