In my understanding, some of the evil "assault rifles" were banned in 91 by the Conservatives, while others in 95 by the Libs. Assuming the Conservatives make good on the promise to roll backs the gun laws to their pre-Bill C-68 state, which presently prohib long guns would become legal? Specifically interested in:

G3, MP5 and other HK long guns
AK-47
FN FAL
Prohib shotguns (i.e. Franchi SPAS)
Sig 550/551/552 (the real one)

P.S. I'm talking about the semi-auto versions of those guns, of course.

well post some pics man!!! ***end of thread hyjack***

It sure would be nice to have a C-68 roll-back huh?
Damn straight. It looks like all my dream guns were banned in '95, so there’s some hope.

P.S. I don't have my dog’s pics handy as I formatted my drive recently and they're on a CD somewhere. I'll try to find it.

my love ...the ar-15 may be able to move out of the safe and on to my dad's ranch! ...well maybe not anytime soon as she was persicuted from the get go. Screw it, I'll by an AK to keep me company during the wait.

fingers X-ed!

Only the 12(6) handguns were prohibited in 1996. All the long guns were prohibited in 1992. The 1995 revisions were only to correspond to the lieberal Firearms Act. Peviously they were referred to by the OIC number, afterwards the 12(x) category.

That sucks :(

indeed....I am 31 and didn't get the chance to aquire a prohib. cert. on my PAL. My ol' man has a bunch so I guess one ####ty day (his passing) I will be grandfathered. In case I take a 'dirt nap' before him we made sure one of my lil' sisters got her PAL too. I paid for the course and drove her there and back! all we can do is continue to protest. We won a small battle with the election but need to keep it up. Maybe one sweet day I can take the AR outside the range again...oh to dream...

No, you can't inherit anything but 12(6) handguns made before 1946.

I thought for sure the AKs were made restricted in the 1992 round and then prohibited in 1995.

Lucky for me you are wrong...Check the 'Grandfathering requirments for prohibs. "on CFC. Kids and other direct rels (must be a vaild PAL/POL holder of course). can inherit no questions. I am not sure if that give me a 12(6) or if I can JUST have those guns of my dads...I better get him to buy more in that case! They sure a cheap due to the shortage of legit. buyers.

I belive I can have his short bar. Hand guns. All 12(6) modern. He doesn't have any 12(5) That was gramps.and those are 'gone'. He was/is lisenced the whole time and I have my restricted PAL so no issue there.

Not all of the current prohib rifles were prohibs before 95. AK's and FN's were restricted then. I bought my first FN in 94 (EDIT checked my records and it was 93 I bought it, and yes it was restricted not prohib) and at that time it was restricted and that is how I got grandfathered to own the others. I still have the original RCMP certificate.

I'd suggest you read it again, Redleg is right. Grandfathering ONLY applies to 12(6) firearms made prior to '46. When you inherit them you would get 12(7) added to your license. Any other prohib class can not be inherited by someone without that class already.

Here's the info from the CFC Fact Sheet on inheriting firearms.

Grandfathering Requirements for Prohibited Firearms
As a general rule, to be able to acquire a prohibited firearm, you need “grandfathering privileges” for that particular category of prohibited firearm. In other words, you must have continuously held a valid registration certificate for a firearm in that category since December 1, 1998. A registration certificate is valid only if you already have a valid licence authorizing you to possess that category of firearm.

Exception: You do not need grandfathering privileges to inherit a registered prohibited handgun that discharges .25 or .32 calibre ammunition or that has a barrel length of 105 mm or less if:

the handgun was manufactured before 1946, and
you are the spouse, brother, sister, child or grandchild of the registered owner; and
the handgun is used for a permitted purpose such as target shooting or as part of a collection.

How about this... The laws stay exactly the same but with even harsher penalties.

However, anyone who holds a valid PAL/POL is exempt (i.e. Valid 'Legal Owners' can buy anything that isn't Full-Auto, and magazine limits are gone) :D

Ineligible Heirs or Unwanted Firearms

If there is no eligible heir, or if the heir does not want an inherited firearm, the estate may:
  • sell or give the firearm to any individual, museum or business with a licence to acquire that particular type of firearms through the official transfer process; or
  • export it to a country that allows it: call the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade at 1 800 267-8376 for information on requirements for an export permit; or
  • have the firearm permanently deactivated so that it no longer meets the definition of a firearm, and therefore, is exempted from the requirements of the Firearms Act; or
  • turn the firearm in to a police officer or firearms officer for disposal: Call first.
So if I don't have 12(6) I cannot inherite short bar. modern handguns?? Thats what I am learning here...What about the 'As a General rule' statement? Could there be an exception I wonder?
