Hey guys, I am looking for a reliable used 12 ga single shot break action shotgun. Money is tight, my budget is around 100-150 bucks. Is this budget feasible? What models/makes should I be looking at, I was thinking Baikal 18.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

The question comes down to hammer gun or hammerless. Hammerless Baikal IJ-18, hammer gun H&R Pardner. Both retail for about the same money, both are well made and will last for years if you look after them.

Just curious. Is there a particular reason you want a single shot? If it's because of budget you may find a fairly nice pump shotgun such as an older JC Higgins or Savage etc for around $150.00 if you keep your eyes peeled. If on the other hand you just want a single shot then disregard what I just said!!.

To me they seem to be more reliable (less moving parts), but if I find a pump action in good condition for the same price I would consider choosing it instead.
Maritime storm, I would prefer a hammer on it.

Thanks for all the replies everyone :) !

Cooeys are great, easily had for your price range, external hammer. As with all break barrel shotguns, they can still have issues. The big one for me is lock up. Nothing says "I just went in my pants" like looking at the back end of a shell when the gun breaks open after a shot. That usually happens after far too much use but I have seen it happen with too much oil on mechanism. Also you will likely be limited to full choke, which means no steel shot, which means no hunting over water or cultivated land.

On the other hand, you might be surprised to see how reliable a pump shotgun is. My mossberg 500 comes apart in seconds with the push of a pin or two depending how far you want to get in there to clean. Moving parts are also minimal if you don't include the trigger group. Just remember not to leave your chokes in when you're not using it and use some kind of anti-sieze lubricant on them.

If you still want a single, I'd go for the cooey, I grew up shooting one and there's many squirls, rabbits, ducks, and miscellaneous animals to testify it works. But I think before long you're going to want something with a bit more firepower. Did you consider an over and under? At least that way you can shoot some double skeet if you want.
