Ok, spare me the rhetoric, I'm NOT advocating chopping old milsurps,no need to given the number of deflowered virgins already around,WHICH of the milsurps would be your 'go to' rifle for hunting?
*303 British
*30/06
* 65x55 swede( or rebarreled to 8x57,9.3x57,9.3x62)
* 7x57 argentine mauser
* 7.62 x39 SKS
* 7.62 x54 Mosin
* any of the other milsurps that people have used as hunting rifles

Given many of the current factory offering untouched by human hands,the old walnut stocked milsurps still can hold their own....

Something in 30-06 would be best. The rest are awkward calibers with poor ammo choice.

Yeah, good call, a P-17 drilled and tapped for a scope should be up on the list, a decent sportered Enfield with mounts would be my second choice to recommend.

The Argentine Mauser would be a 7.65x53. Argentina never used the 7x57, but a lot of other South American countries did, and that would be my choice. Perhaps a Brazilian 1908 or 1935.

depends on what you are hunting ..

My list would probably be Swiss K31, the shorter M38 MN or the SKS.

Hell, any of them on your list with appropriate ammo would work well. Screw the nay sayers ....

#4 Enfield. Fast handling, best sights, and easy no-smith scope mounts if you prefer.
P-14 or M1917 even sporterized is too long and heavy.
24 inch barreled mausers, 98, 38, etc would be my second choice.
K31 and Mosins are just awkward and hunting ammo is hard to come by if you don't reload.

Tradex has lots..... I'd look at one of the commercial '96's that's already d&t with a proper safety and bent bolt. The '96's are cheap and come in 6.5x55 which is one of the best all around cartridges ever.

I don't think they have any commercial 96's in 6.5x55, they're all 8x57 or 9.3x57 if I'm not mistaken.

If you want an '06, keep an eye open for one of the M1917s sported by BSA. Will be BSA "pilarm" marked. Original stock cut down with grip checkered, receiver recontoured to Remington 700 profile, drilled and tapped, ramped front sight. These are nice rifles, tend to sell for $250 or so. Good value.

I have hunted with many of those cartridges! From the list, as long as the bullet weight and terminal velocity are sufficient for your intended target, your bigger issue is accuracy. A crap old milsurp rifle might not group minute of anything at expected distanced. Forget the folklore, take the rifle to a place where you can fire enough rounds to get comfortable. Then make your choice.

FWIW, the winningest rifles at the club's milsurp matches have been No.4s, K31s and SKS', not any of the others.

Did you mean "Milarm"?

No, BSA's trademark was three rifles "piled" using the nosecap swivels. "Pilearm", "pilarm", not sure of the spelling.

I have a nice Parker Hale 303 in excellent shape,but my current favourite is a 65x55 swede from Tradeex.I generally find you can get an excellent factory 'sporterized' milsurp for about $250....pretty good value for the money,and when you put a Leupold m-8 4x on it,you have a nice hunting rifle for not too much money,maybe $400

You still didn't say what the hunt is for....... But I agree with your choice..... And if it were for bigger game, like the great bears etc, it would be the Wagner........

I'll add the Ross to that list. In full size, it's a beast to lug around, however, once bubba has been trimming at it, it can be a nice hunting rifle. I've used the Ross in 303Br, and 303Epps to good effect.

Everyone loves the #4, Lee Enfield and I had one for a spell, but, the #1Mk3* is a lighter, and still effective hunting arm.

The 303 is capable of pretty much anything you can do with an '06 from a hunting perspective.

The 6.5X55 is a great cartridge, and if you have a decent milsurp, quite accurate. I've hunted moose and deer with it. Some day I'll have another.

The SKS, I think if you can find a consistently accurate one, is a capable close range number for deer. Not sure I'd stretch it beyond that, light bullets with not enough oomph for me.

Really any of the old military rifles are just fine for hunting. The SKS is a deer rifle IMO, while the others are fine for general use.

As noted already, the BSA rifles are a very good value, but I don't consider them (nor the Tradeex rifles) to be bubbas.
