ok, i have 3 bucks that i am seeing (season opened sept 10).
1) small forkhorn.
2) small 3 or 4 point.
4) medium 4 point that is bigger than 95% of the deer tagged around here. but not a big deer in any real sense.

which should i take?

None of the above.... at least this early in the season... The season has only been open for 17 days, why not enjoy it instead of tagging out so early on a small deer... Who knows whats gonna come by when the rut kicks in... Just my opinion..

because the freezer is almost empty and i have tags for mule deer, elk, sheep, and black bear as well.

Fair enough..... In that case I would shoot the biggest bodied one for obvious reasons.... I would guess that the horns are not gonna matter to you much because none are big so shoot whichever is gonna fill your belly the most...

If it's the freezer you want to fill, I would take the bigger of the three.
First, it will add more to that empty freezer
Second, at this time of the year, he will be very tasty, with no rut in progress.
For eating, I would much sooner harvest a smaller buck now than a bigger stinky buck during the rut.

haven't been out in a couple of days, but i may leave the biggest of the 3 alone. the core of his range is on my land, hopefully this will prevent someone else from getting him and he will be bigger next year. the 2 smaller bucks seem to live mostly in a piece of landlocked crownland coming onto my place to feed.

The deer that is 95% bigger than most tagged in the area....this to me would be a trophy and would be a no brainer.

most of the harvest is spikes, and forkies, and little basket bucks. so it is really not saying much. in alberta at least the bigger one wouldn't turn any heads.
