So my father wants to load up some ammo for his Ruger #1 in 30-30. These are the 3 bullets he has and wants to use what he has. Intended use? Spring black bear and maybe whitetail in fall.

First up is the Barnes 150gr tsx flatnose designed for the 30-30 speeds
Second is a hornady 160gr ftx
Lastly the sierra 170gr flat point

Hornady hands down..... I use these in my black powder rifle and they are absolute crankers....

The sierras may be good, but no experience with them, and I wouldn't trust a solid at 30-30 velocities...... and I prefer a "shock" bullet for bears that creates a devastating wound channel.... they have very low heart rates when compared to other animals and don't bleed out quick......

I value everybody's opinion that's why I'm asking. In truth I don't think it would matter much which one he picks, but it's fun to get everybody opinion.

In a Ruger #1 I would shoot 165 gr Nosler ballistic tips good B.C no need to shoot a flat point. Keep the shots inside of 150 meters should be good to go. But if the 165 B.T will not chamber then the 150 gr Barnes.Just my thought.

For deer only, I'd pick the pretty red one.
Including bear, hard to argue the 170 flat nosed Sierra.
Think of the kewl factor shewt'in a flat noze owtta Numero Uno Ruger.

Did I win anything? ................cou:
