Those three bullet selections are for tubular magazine rifles and don't take advantage of the #1's ability to use pointy bullets and load them fairly warm.

If it was my rifle I would use a 110gr TTSX and drive it as fast as I could, which would change the 30-30 into a flat shooter at moderate hunting distances.

But of the 3 I would go with the Hornady or Barnes.
 
The limiting factory for the 30 WCF is the case, not the action of the rifle. I would not try and beat listed velocities in reloading manuals by too much.
 
In a #1, bullet shape can be anything that you like.

But at .30-30 velocities and typical ranges, I see no reason to use anything other than the Sierra 170 grain, RNFP.

That good old soft-point 170 grain seems to do everything well that a .30-30 needs it to do.
 
Actually now that I think about it, the Barnes 110gr TAC=TX bullet designed for the .300 BLK might be a perfect 30-30 bullet. You should be able to push it to about 2700fps +++ which would give reliable expansion to over 300 yards.

Are you going to be loading for him or does he load himself? I would personally load the Barnes X bullet to the full capability of the #1 action in W-W cases and hunt with that load. I suspect one could push a 150 gn bullet at about 2600 fps from a #1 and still stay within the pressure restraints of the case.
 
Nobody actually said anything about using a 30-30 at 1000 meters, Pitbull said that Sierra bullets have worked well for him out to 1000 m. Didn't say what cartridge he shot them from.
 
DG, my vote goes to the TSX-FN

I load these up for reduced recoil loads in my 308win, and loaded them previously in my wife's Marlin 308 Express.
They are rated for the Express which is pretty close to 308win velocity.

The deep hollowpoint on these will open up huge at the lower velocity of the 30-30.

This is a pic of a grouping using them in my 308. The recovered bullet was found 8" in the dirt bank behind the target, that was after traveling through the 2x6 the target was tacked to. Impact velocity would have been approx 2000fps, these loads average 2500fps chrony'd @ 15ft.

That said. A 170gr FP cup & core bullet really shines in the 30-30

I'd use a std C&C 150gr spitzer.

Plan on using the same in my Marlin 336 and making it into a 2 shot. 1 in the mag and 1 in the chamber.
