which cal to choose

In 1998 I went with the 280 Remington as that was what was available.
When Looking for a 260/6.5, a short action became available first.
I had a 270 which I sold and a 30-06 which I gave to my son.
The difference between a 270 and the 280 is 0.007".
If you reload there are a number of factors to research: Ballistics, reloading charts, recoil, availability of bullets and brass.

And now to stir the pot: The only reason to have a 7mm08 is the lesser chance of hitting yourself in the eye with the bolt when reloading!

For targets, and sometimes deer. I'd go the 7mm-08. For all around hunting. I'd go the .280 hands down. Only bcuz I love .280's. As for game. Dead is dead. Not a big enough diff to worry about. Of course a short action blr in 7mm-08 would be a sweet carry!
