Hey guys i am thinking about getting into a 700P, am wondering about which calibre is better. should i go with the 6.8 spc, or .308? i will probably be doing some longer shooting....like 200-600 yards. how avalible is 6.8 spc ammo, for one, and how does it stand up? the only thing ive heard about it is its like a .270 win. so can it also fire .270 win ammo? or will this result in a broken rifle? i know all i need to about .308, i love that round also. but my favorite is by far the .270 .... thanks in advance for your help guys. cheers!:sniper:

I have been keeping a bit of an eye out for this 6.8 to see if its getting any more comon, and i NEVER see it anywhere. I have a Rem 700P in .308 and i really do like it, but in some ways i kinda wish i had gone with the .300wm. I went with the .308 instead mostly for the ammo accessability.

hahaha, easy now.....i was just asking. remember there are NO stupid questions, only stupid answers. i figured the .308 was the best route too. although for 799$ i had to consider the 6.8spc. thanks for the help guys, and if anyone actually has the 6.8 your input would be nice.

EDIT:i am going to buy new from dealer, not used, from EE. thanks though.

Just ribbin' yah... no offence intended.

If you do go with the .308... and I think you should... check out that new R5 Remington... I think that's what it's called.

Frontier Firearms has them and they look really promising. Frontier is a sponsor so just look for the link at the top of the page... go to his website and find the R5... there's a pretty interesting article that he has there.

ya see this is exactly what i should have done in the first place, was ask what does everyone think of the 6.8spc as a round, thats it. if i was going to buy a 700p in 308, i was going to just go with the milspec. yeah it is a beauty. and with a HS stock. i have bought a couple rifles from marlin at frontier already, he is a great guy...my first AR is going to be here any day...:D the only reason i was considering the 700p was because he has the 6.8 spc on sale for 799. seemed like a good deal, but i wasnt sure about the 6.8spc so ok then i should go for the milspec one. ok if i must.

For practical purposes, the 6.8SPC is essentially a reloading only option in Canada, assuming you can source brass. I haven't seen any factory ammo on shelves. It also looks like the US Military won't be pursuing it, even on a limited basis for SOCOM guys, (at least for now) so its kind of an orphan. Remington isn't known for really supporting new cartridges, so once civilian demand drops to a certain point, its gone from their catalogs. The .308 makes much more sense. Cheaper to shoot, plenty accurate and the barrel will last a lot longer than the .300 Win Mag.

"...so can it also fire .270 win ammo?..." No. A .270 won't go in a 6.8 chamber.
If you opt for a 6.8, buy 500 empty cases, dies and a shell holder too. If you can find any. Even if you're not reloading now. The manufacturers regularly drop new cartridges if they don't meet sales projections with no regard for the people who bought whatever it was. Having brass, at least, will let you keep shooting.

6.8SPC was originally designed for the AR if I remember correctly

yes and this was one of my plus points, as having an AR upper in 6.8, and a rifle in the same would be sweet, but if you cannot even find brass i wont be buying either of them. i will stick to the good old .308, as i like it anyhow. too bad an AR 10 is so costly. thanks for the help guys!

If I'd be a reloading fanatic etc.. I would tackle the 6.8SPC. If I remember correctly, Wholesales Sports Edmonton had some Remington Brass in the caliber available & its been there for many months (At least 500rds+ was in stock, in the back).

However, this would be for a semi not a 700P, I just can't see it being successful against competitors like 260's 6.5's, 270's 280's etc & even against the famous .308win
