Which cartridge for a LONG range hunting HAMMER?

I shoot 340 Wby, 338 Lapua and 338 RUM. In my rifles, there isn't 50 fps of difference. Your mileage may vary. Doesn't really matter, a 338 diameter bullet running between 2950 fps and 3000 fps (which is all I get from mine) will get the job done handily. If you want to go faster, AI versions, the Edge, the 338-378 Wby and 338 Excaliber will all push the same bullet 200-300 fps faster. 338-416 Rigby Improved will go a little quicker yet. If you really want a hammer, look at the 378 Wby with 300 gr bullets. I've used all of the above except the Edge, and my personal favorite is the 8mm Rem Mag. - dan

What bullet are you loading with the 8mm Rem Mag?

Have you considered the Lazzeroni Titan? It's a long range .338 rifle that might suit your tastes.

Data says 3550fps muzzle velocity for an 185gr bullet. 1875 ft lbs of energy @ 750 yards.

Only 18" of drop @ 500 yrds with a 300 yrd zero.

I second the 8mm Rem Mag suggestion. Bullet choices are somewhat limited, but compared to the heavy 338s, recoil is much more tolerable IMO. Even without a brake, shooting from the bench is not intolerable.

A 220 @ 2900 will carry 2,000 ft/lbs to 500 yards. Darn good moose medicine IMO.

I am not rich, one rifle a year. Sad I know but true. They are WAY out of my price range. I have to buy optics too. $2500 budget

I own an reload for a 300 RUM, a friend a 338 RUM, you have to be comfortable with recoil (and I dont think anyone really is) to shoot either of these well in an 8 pound gun, in a way that will allow you to actually get the value out of all the powder your burning and be on target downrange. I shoot a sendero partly to manage the recoil with a heavy rifle. I find myself very comfortable shooting long distances from a bench with 200 grain sierra gk, but it is not an all day affair, 20 rounds is enough if you want to be at the top of your game every shot.
Anyway long way to say in my opinion this is about recoil, the rifle your choosing is not especially heavy. if your confident that recoil is not going to be an issue for you then it is pretty clear by the numbers that the 338 has some edge over 30 caliber when distances get long, it just all becomes theoretical if your not shooting it well enough to take advantage of it, and since there is some relief from that shoulder pounding in a 300 thats what I went with, and never regretted it. THe gun shoots really well and a 200 grain bullet sitting on a 90 plus grain charge of H1000 is no joke.

I love my .338 RUM. I think that a .338 Lapua would also give you all the thrills recoil wise that require. My current load consists of a healthy dose of Retumbo and 250 grain TSX bullets.
