Since I only want one 1911 (I hope that I don't catch the disease of wanting a dozen or more), it probably will be a Colt. It will see only light use at a range.

What model would you Colt owners out there recommend? An older model or a newer model? Government or Combat Commander or ?? I'd appreciate your sharing your knowledge about the pros and cons of the various models?

Series 70 government in 45acp...that is the absolute definition of 1911.

I'd +1 the Colt Series 70 Government model. It's a classic and still in the realm of possibilities to readily find, and without breaking the bank, when you do.

Thanks for the advice everyone. When recommending a Series 70, are you speaking of the new Series 70 or the older one? Or doesn't it make a difference? And how is the recent XSE different, or isn't it? There seem to be more of the XSE model around.

what they're NOT telling you is about the COLLET BUSHING on the old ones- although i've NEVER had a "finger" break, it is a "rumored" common occurance , so be aware of that- i don't know whether it;s a straight parts replacement, or whether you have to match the barrel with SOLID bushing, but was a sore point- also to find an unaltered one could be tough- i've got one, but it;s been altered- it's also in NICKLE

I handled a new Stainless Lightweight Commander a little while ago, very impressive - excellent quality, tight and smooth with well fitted barrel and beavertail and a really amazing trigger (for a Series 80 more than amazing, it was truly first class). I'd certainly be happy with one, in fact I almost was - damned bank balance.
