im looking at a real basic, simple .223 to shoot out to 200 yards from a bench. simple plinking, thats it.

i was going to put together my own starting kit of stevens 200 in .223, bushnell elite 3200 10x 40 and a bipod, but ive seen some comob kits from savage and remington that seem real decent.

one is a remington 710 in 223 with a 3-9x40 bushnell scope, mounts and sling for something like $414 from SIR. it has a detach box magazine and all id have to do is get the bipod and id be set.

second is a savage 11FXP3 in 223, internal magazine, scope, sling and accutrigger. runs for about $430 or something.

which one would be decent? whats the diff between a rem 700 and 710?

should i forget both of them?

Do a search around the site for the Rem 710. Lots of CGNs have expressed their opinion about this rifle. Most opinions posted are not positive. Apart from both having the Remington name on them the 700 and 710 have nothing in common. The 710 is not an economy version of the 700. The Stevens 200 is a cousin to the 11FXP3. The scope that comes in these combo kits will be a promotional type scope - the 3200 10x40 is in a different league, and is widely reported as being a "best buy" for what you want to do.

hmm i quickly ran the 710 in the search but it came up with nothing. ill have to try again.

i know the scopes are junk, for the most part, but my plan was to use that for a bit then get a new scope. but in these cases where a decent savage rifle and rings together is just over $400, its pretty much cheaper then buying the rifle and rings alone, not to mention the scope and sling.

so i should lean to savage over remington?

I was looking at the same two rifles the Stevens and the 700 SPS. Had no clue about what scope but I know I want something I can grow into so it had to have legs for shooting out farther than Id initially shoot to. Start at 100 move to 200 and 300.
Im el cheapo grande when it comes to guns and have just started going more expensive as Im beginning to understand what I like and what Im looking for in a gun.
Ive always heard great things about the 700s, seems everyones owned one or does own one. But then the cheaper stevens came out. And I almsot went for that because its a cheap plinker. But Ive firmly settled on the 700 now. Personally I believe that it will be able to grow with me more as a rifle than the Stevens is capable of which was something huge I wanted and look for in a rifle, or any gun. Then Ill top it off with a Bushnell Banner 6x24x40 and have at her.
I should have a gun that will consistantly outshoot me for a while and when Im ready therell be tons of things I can do with it to make it continually outshoot me in the form of upgrades.
In the end it depends on what you want though. I think either gun will provide you with a solid base to start shooting with. And have fun no matter what you choose and shoot.;)
