I decided I wanted to get a decent 22 for me and the kids to use at the range. Wanted something with a scope. Lots of reading later, decided on the CZ 452. Naturally I was drawn to the Varmit model, but more investigation suggested that it may not be the most accurate. I mean your sacrificing iron sights and more weight, if you're not even getting the accuracy, then what's the point of the Varmit model. Just looks? Thanks in advance for anyones comment.

The varmints shorter, heavier and therefore stiffer barrel technically means it should be more accurate. I liked how mine shot so much that a bought another one. Cannot have too much of a good thing.

There is also the 16" heavy barrel model. It should be superbly accurate with that short, stiff barrel and not balance too nose heavy like longer barrelled Varmint model.

From the guys on rimfire central, I've read that the American and Varmint shoot about the same, which for both is excellent accuracy. I would expect either model to shoot 0.5" groups at 50 yards with careful selection of standard hunting ammo brands. I'm not talking special target ammo, but stuff like AE hollow points and CCI mini mags. Get the gun you like the most.

If you intend to scope it, get the American or Varmint. I wouldn't get the Lux unless you plan to shoot with iron sights. The Lux was optimized for iron sights, the American and Varmint for optics.

The most accurate CZ in a walnut stocked rifle is the Full stock model. In my opinion the next one after that is a toss up. I have an American that is a great shooter, I have a Silhouette that is a great shooter. My Lux and Ultra Lux aren't broken in enough just yet. All CZ's can benefit with an adjustment with the YoDave trigger kit. I have a varmint as well but have not messed with it too much. With CZ's as with many 22's the more money you spend on ammo, the better the accuracy.
I have the varmints in 17HMR and a bedded American. The American is a more accurate piece.
So if you can't find a full stock, get an American, or try out a 453 with the single set trigger. FS

A 1/2 inch at 50 yards, ya sure you could do it. But I wouldn't expect it to happen every time with AE hollow points. FS

Which model to get depends primarily on what sort of shooting you do most, given that all CZ rimfire models have a good reputation for accuracy. The extra weight and broader forend of the Varmint model are better suited to shooting from a bipod or rest. The American is best suited to carrying around and offhand shooting with a scope. The Lux and FS both have stocks optimized for open sights.

Have you tried them? My CZ 452 American loves them despite what everyone says about standard velocity ammo being the most accurate. Same with a heavy barrel Lakefield 91T I had (which outshot the CZ, but is single shot, and too heavy for gophering IMO). Too bad they aren't on the shelves here any more. Just the solids. I saved my last brick (or two?) for gophers.

i picked up some AE hollows(400 brick) just last Friday at Cabelas. They had some solids (500 brick) also and Federal hollows at 21.99/brick.

I picked up a Mossberg 144 lsb heavy 27" barrel and with a bipod, will certainly be gophering with it in May. It is heavy to carry if the gophers are thinned out and you have to walk, but I park ed, set up and have shot from one place for several hours.

Thanks for letting me know. I got sick of asking them every time I went in. Simply gave up and switched to Federal bulk hp's. I bet you can shoot a pretty tight group with that Mossberg. Have you tested it on paper with AE HP's?

We hear good reports from all versions but the 16" american's seem to be exceptional for some reason. Could be the short barrel has less vibration (waves)?

been too cold to go to the range. I know it shoots everything I put thru it. The bulk Winchester HPs so far are the best. 333s not far behind. Will test the AEs this week if it stays warmer. Been pushing 100 yards but most accurate about 75, I call it minute of gopher as that is what I bought it for. Paper only to test and see which ammo it likes the most. Really like the weight as it steadies against the shoulder.

I may go back to Cabela's tomorrow to see if any HPs either AE or Federal are left, as gophers do not know what hits them. My Marlin 81s shoot EA solids the same as the 333s they have been set for. But 333s are much cheaper and hollow points. Looking forward to shooting the 144 as well as the Marlin 990l i got free. Rusted barrel on the outside ( cleaned up great) but it sure shoots anything and everything.Just like my son's Winchester 490.

So I have a job ahead of me when it proves a warm day. Lots to re-sight and try. Changed a few scopes and new additions. A BSA .222 as soon as I get reloads ( for the longer shots).

Grizz

Yes I have tried the AE rimfire product and I like it quite a bit, I use my Paco tool with this ammo a lot. The 38gr HP is my go to hunting and plinking choice, bought a few bricks when they were $13.50,( one of my best investments ever) a number of years ago.
I tried them in my Cooper at 100 yards one day over Christmas, the first 2 shots were almost touching, the next 3 weren't quite as good. FS

Am I the only one that shoots federal 710 from Canadian Tire. Was hitting the end of a empty rimfire cartridge at 50 meters with a CZ varmint, excellent through a 46b mossberg with peeps too.

I have 2 - 452 Americans. One is a 22LR, the other a 17HMR. Both are very accurate with ammo they like. But if you want real performance from them, they benefit from quality ammo. Some of the bulk ammo shoots quite well, but it always will give up some accuracy when compared to match quality ammo. Again, not all expensive ammo shoots well in every rifle. You may have to try several to find the one that works best. My 452 likes a certain lot of RWS Rifle Match, but does not like the present lot of RWS R50 I have. It also shoots a recent lot of Lapua Center-X very well. If I was to choose a bulk ammo, I would have to say Winchester 333, with Federal 525 Bulk a close second. Eagleye.

Have you tried Eley in your .22? how did it perform?

Mine seems to like Dynapoint over 333, Expert, Federal, Wildcat, T22, Remington Sub, AE solid (haven't tried the hollow).

Also really likes the Eley Sport which isnt to expensive at around $5 a box.

+1 For Eley Sport & Club (green & orange). You can't go wrong with either of these in a 452. My best group so far is .4" at 50 yards with Eley club out of my 452 American.

Keep in mind as well that Eley isn't subject to the same ammo shortages as everything else coming out of the states, so, just find someone who carries it, and they should have a ton. That's been my experience here in ON. Try Epps, or Target Shooting Products. All kinds of it, and it's well worth it for what you're paying, which, when it comes to rimfire, isn't that bad.

I picked up a used American in 22 here about a month ago, trigger kit was installed. Shot it today at the 25 range between the 223 and the 222. What a fantastic shooting rifle, only shot 3 groups, smaller than the size of a dime and the best part is, this was with the 38gr American Eagle ammo. Was a touch breezey for 50 yard groups.
I might have to go back to the range again tomorrow, I had the whole place to myself. FS
I'm going back tomorrow with some Lapua and see how that works
