Going to buy a CZ455 tonight. I'm not sure which model yet. I definitely will be scoping it at some point, and it will mostly be used for bench shooting. I understand the 455 American has a higher comb intended for use with a scope, but for argument's sake, let's say I've got a big head. Maybe the standard stock would be fine for me? I guess this is something I will find out by checking them out in person. I'm assuming there are plenty of people who have scopes with the standard stock.

I'm not sure if I'm really interested in the 455 Varmint. Does the bull barrel add a lot of weight? Although I'll be mostly bench shooting, this will also be the gun take with me into the bush. I don't want something heavy and unwieldy. One thing I do want though, is a nice walnut stock, so I'm kinda torn between the Lux and the American.

Decisions, decisions.

if you're going to use a scope exclusively, I'd go for the American. its also a bit shorter than the lux (I believe. I know the lux is much longer in the 452, but I think the 455 barrel is shorter than 452), which will serve you better in the bush.

The number of grooves in a CZ barrel yields no difference with respect to accuracy. If you are buying a new CZ, buy a 452 if you can. They don't seem to have as many accuracy issues as the 455. If the rifle is scoped, the American is the one to choose if the Varmint is too heavy. On the other hand, if shooting from the bench the Varmint is the better choice, for two reasons. First the extra weight of the barrel gives greater stability. Second the fore arm is a little wider and fits rests a little better than the round and narrow fore arm of the American as well as the Lux or Standard.

The Varmint, easily IMO. It has a more bench friendly stock. The fore end is wide, and flat, whereas the stock on the American is very narrow, and rounded. The Varmint barrel is also heavier and will aid you in keeping the rifle steady, plus the higher comb versus the hogback of the Lux and Ultra Lux as you mentioned.

The Lux and Ultra Lux are wicked rifles, and I have both (452s), but you'll have to remove the rear sight and maybe the sight hood, and if you're scoping it you're losing one of the benefits of the greater sight radius.

Well, I ended up walking out with the 455 American. I think the Lux stock would have been fine with a scope, but it's hard to tell for sure until you actually mount one on it. I checked out the Varmint and the Super Match as well, and the Varmint was just too muzzle heavy. I already have a Savage BTVSS with a bull barrel that is a dedicated bench gun. I can't imagine I would enjoy shooting the Varmint off hand. The Super Match was nice, but had a much plainer stock and wasn't on sale. The American had the nicest stock by far, AND was on sale. Now I gotta figure out what I'm going to do for a scope.

Burris Zee Rings and a Leupold 2-7 rimfire scope will fit the bill nicely.
You can even go up to a 40mm Bell in the VXI, but parallax adjustment will be required.
Nice choice btw.
.17HMR or .22 Lr?
Rob

22LR. I keep telling myself I need a 17HMR, but they didn't have one in stock, and then I'd have to start hoarding another caliber cartridge. Lol.

That's my excuse for another firearm  Wolverine Supplies has CZ barrel sets in stock so you can make your new rifle multi-functional (as per the 455 design intent ;)) and order yerself a .17 HMR American barrel!

This was the 4th Ave Canadian Tire in St Catharines. They have a great selection of guns.

Oh heck, that's nearly around the block from me. Do you shoot at Silverdale?

The 4th Ave store brought the American 455s in because I called them last year to ask for a price. They do that every time I ask for JUST a quote! Lol. "We ordered them in anyway".

Small world.

Yup, in fact I'll be there on Saturday. Unfortunately won't be bringing the CZ since I don't have a scope for it yet. I could borrow the scope off my Mark II but I don't feel like messing around trading scopes back and forth.

Probably won't get a .17 barrel for the CZ. I'll just buy another gun. :)
