Which Dewey M15 guide to get?

Here's the link. Im not sure which guide to get as it lists 3 different types of M14 rifles.

Can anyone help me out? Yeah, I'm here (Hungry) Save your money.

Are these coated dewey rods really that good? I heard the nylon can pickup shaving and scratch the bore.

Don't know whether the guide I ordered actually fits since I am still awaiting my Norc M-305. But I ordered the "M-14-1 heavy duty Fits military M-14s and M1As - $6.95". Don't know what heavy duty means but for an extra $1...

I also ordered and received from Brownell's the Dewey rod. Can't say from experience whether they are the Cat's Meow, but the M-14 gods seem to indicate that. Hungry here: Save your money.

Frankly, most of us "plinkers" probably will never notice the difference these "must have" tools might make. But, hey, it's fun and you can never have too many tools. :D

Save your money....

Don't rush out and buy a Dewey rod guide. After all those years of competing in NRA High Power, I just made do with a 12 ga hull. It fits around the flash suppressor perfectly. Here's how you do it.

I like using AA hulls or ANY 12 gauge hull with a brass base (higher is better)

* punch out the primer with a decapping rod from any resizing spindle
* drill out the primer pocket with a 1/4" drill, any bit fat enough to accomodate your rod
* Trim about 1/2" of the crimp so that your hull slips right over the flash suppressor
* Make MORE of them to give to your M14 lovers at the local Gun Club
* Bask in your accumulated "Cool Factor" that my advice gives you all. ha ha ha ha ha

Save your money. What's in your wallet ?

I hate (I'm warned to use this word sparingly) it when you guys rush out and spend your money. That's precisely the reason I held those clinics, so that you guys won't blast your money all over the place. Download my video(s)... they are free. Spend your money on practice ammo and match fees.... like Provincial Rifle Associations or my Service Rifle matches with your M14's all tricked out for rundowns !!

Dammit, I'd better get working on some DVD's for you M14 newbsticks......

Hungry,

So would you recommend this rod or is there something better/safer for my gun?

Hungry here: Just followed the link. ANY of the M14 ones are fine. The first one will do the job. The Heavy Duty one ? Buy it only for "LCV" or look cool value. I would not bother. Better yet, just hog out a 12 gauge hull and save your money. I have never bought one in 20 years. Now, I did buy a Delrin one for my M1 Garands when I competed with them. That was worthwhile since the holes are kinda offset at the end nearest the sights to accomodate the gas cylinder lock. Make sense ?

I bought a 24" Dewey rod at Camp Perry many, many years ago. I could roll it around on their glass table top... I hope that it was flat....

Anyways, this shorter length is not as likely to trip the bolt. And then have the rod flying out the muzzle.. seen this lots of times. We avoided that by using a standard issue stripper clip and inserting it into the clip slot to block the bolt's forward travel (under spring pressure of course).

Now regarding the surface of the rod... there are dozens of opinions and justifications for differently coated or uncoated or steel or stainless steel rods. I don't want to get into that argument here or ever since all our evidence is anecdotal (good for shzt).

I like a stainless rod. Some people prefer a coated rod. I have all kinds of painted/coated (Kleenbore), vinyl coated (Dewey Professional for my .308 sniper rigs), and stainless (Dewey for my M14's and M1's).

Do I see a difference ? Heck no.... I just happen to get them on sale or find them at a good price so I bought them....

Buy and use what works for YOU and yer budget !!

Cheers,
Barney

Thanks for the advice guys. The one thing that kinda sucks is that the Dewey rod is one piece so its like 3 freaking feet long, the usgi kit just slips into the butt stock lol... maybe ill take a look for some collapsable graphite rod or something a bit more portable, if not ill probably just get the dewey

I think I obsess over these stupid little details way too much... :D

y'all got the short 1 at 3ft- mine's 48 inch- russels only has the 48 and 44 - i just put mine in the hard case right along side the 14- which is 44 inches long, and the case is a standard shotgun at 52- so you really don't notice how long the thing is unless you're unless you're working on end with a low ceiling or in a tent or something
