I have just stripped down both forearm and butt stock of my Winchester 37A. Both are in relatively like new condition (minus a few little dings here and there, but nothing to worry about), at least no cracks. I applied one coat of dark walnut, then 2 coats of red mahogany to give it a reddish colour. I now have to decide which finish I am to use. I want oil, and I want to use either Minwax Antique protective oil finish (does anybody know if this is an oil/varnish blend..which I would like), And Minwax Tung oil protective finish (which states on the container that you gain more gloss with each coat). I want an oil finish but want one with the varnish blend to build a surface after several coats. Which one will look better, and is there really any difference between these two? (this is my first time trying to refinish with oil).

Thanks

If you want a shiny finish go with pure tung oil. Not the tung oil finishes available.
"...you gain more gloss with each coat..." Yep. Tung oil will give you a shinier finish with more coats rubbed in. Just remember that once tung oil is on, there's no re-staining if you don't like the result. Tung oil soaks into the wood about 1/4", hardens and gives you a nearly waterproof finish.
If you want a flat finish use BLO(boiled linseed oil). It's not as hard a finish nor water resitant as tung oil.
