First of all, I know these two guns have nothing in common, they both just happen to be something I have thought about buying.

I typically shoot 9mm at the range, and wanted something with a bit more kick. ie. .357 magnum or .45 ACP for some added fun. Just for target shooting, nothing fancy.

I've been looking at the Ruger GP100 4.2" .357. Which would let me shoot .357 magnum and then .38 spcl when I want to save a bit on ammo. I really like the look and feel of this revolver, and the shorter barrel length.

And most recently I was looking at the Para GI Expert 1911 .45 ACP. I've always liked 1911s and shooting .45. I like the look and feel of the Para, and the price is great.

The reality of this may be just which one I will buy first, rather than which one over the other. Which one would you buy first?

Pretty hard to go wrong with a GP 100 - very robust and very reliable - so I would make that item #1. I would pass on a Para and consider something else ( I have an STI Spartan which is an excellent and not too expensive item ) amongst the many 1911's out there - if cost is an issue consider the Norc 1911's as I hear nothing but good stuff about them and use the savings to buy more ammo.

Tomochan are you saying that the Norc 1911 would be better quality than the Para 1911? Or just that it would be better value for the money?

Oh he just doesn't like Para, there is some mixed reviews about them.
I have a 9mm 1911 Para and its prefect.
you'll hear alot of don't buy a glock (i hate em) or don't buy this or that because someone had bad dealings with that company. doesn't mean all their guns are bad.
Norc is a good product but its cheap, so u never know.

The Gp-100 is a good start.

there's more than mixed reviews about paras- there's HORROR stories about finishes, things not working right, poor customer service, and parts flying off ( i witnessed a front sight disappear during a match)
get the gp100 to learn on, then when you get good, get a kimber or a spartan- if you can't afford that , a gunnar tuned norc- colt used to OWN THE 1911 end of things, but now there's better deals out there-

remember, the norcs are used stateside as a base platform from which to build- that speaks volumes for the "hobbyist" that wants to upgrade

I'd go for a 1911 in 45 any time without choosing a special name
(Para, STI, Remington, Springfield, Kimber, Colt... etc)
market is very good on 1911 parts for an upgrade, so is not important which name you have on slide ....as long as yr pistol has a forged slide/frame !

Buy the Ruger. If even 10% of the horror stories about Para's are true that is more then enough reasons not to buy one. If you want a 45 ACP buy one just pick another make of gun for your own sake.

Hmm, didn't realize there were that many problems with the Paras. Guess I really only just started looking at them recently though and may have tuned it out. Seems to feel a lot more solid than a Norinco 1911 though.

or you could kick it up a notch and go REDHAWK- 4.2 inch barrel. stainless, and just a WHOLE LOT BETTER than any 357

I would get a gp 100. Para is a piece of #### and there customer service is horrible. If you want to look into 1911 you can go wrong with STI, best bang for your buck and amazing customer service.

I'll agree the customer service is crap, but the gun i bought is great, although my gun dealer does a check on every gun when it comes in and if it aint up to his standards he returns them

i'm a 1911 fan but i'll never be without a revolver.the paras are getting a bad rap and it is well deserved.THE FINISH IS CRAP.i've also been at the range when they fell apart.not cool. my colt combat elite 1911 has been the best 1911 out of the box i've had. A gp100 or 586,686 is a very good and inexpensive way to start shooting.the revolver is a good first handgun too.Simple and Safe.

Got with the GP-100, i have one myself. Its built like a tank, and is very pleasing on the eye. Lots of fun to shoot. If i was gonna get a 1911 i wouldnt get a Para. Ive heard its hard to get parts for them.

+1 GP100 4.2-incher. Can't go wrong with this choice as the next "buy" after your 9mm pistol.

Then, IMO, buy whichever 1911 with good reviews that tickles your fancy, and that you can afford. Like any toy, buy what you can afford.

If I wanted to own only one .45 pistol, I would've gone with an STI-something. But I want 3 or more 1911s....so got Norkies instead. No regrets, no complaints.

I'd Go with the Ruger .357 Mag. My friend has one. It's sweet to shoot the .357 if you want it to kick hard and if not then 38 Special.

Plus you already got a Glock 9mm right?? So You've got a semi-auto pistol already, might as well grab a revolver so you have both. Then later if you want a 45ACP pistol grab it too!!:D
