Which gun would you take?

I am going to TRY to manage a trip in Sept/06 to the Yukon for a moose hunt. :D I don't get trips like this all the time. Last trip out was in 1998.

I have a couple of options for guns to take.

#1 Remington 7600 in 35Whelen. Scoped with Leupold 1.5x5. Shoots 250gr Speers very consistently. I have shot/hunted with rifle alot and have much confidence in it.

#2 I have a "new to me" Remington Classic in 300H&H on the way. It will get a 3x9 Leupold on it. It's supposed to be quite accurate, but I don't have it yet. I will prolly try 180gr NPs or 200gr Speer SPs or those Nosler Accubond thingys in it.

Which rifle would you take, & why?

I would take the 300H&H... with 200 grain accubonds it should be good for 400 yards on Bullwinkle. The Whelen is a fine Moose cartridge also but the idea of a jerkamatic for hunting Alaska is just plain wrong.:p

I would take my WSM, but it might be obsolete by September. :D

Hey Paul: In my opinion you answered your own question. "I have shot/hunted the rifle alot..." There is nothing that can improve your chances like knowing the gun you carry. Take it from someone who knows. (I carry for a living) Futhermore the .35 Whelen will flat out stop ANY moose in North America. The last time I checked Alaskan moose have a heart and lungs like other moose. Having said that I wish I was going too. Take care.

Well in that case I suppose I should offer you some GOOD advice. Take the 35, in the pump. I know, I know, you thought I was going to be mean and say something like "are you insane?" and then deride the Remingtons as being POSs, and thier quality as being awful. You probably figured I would then slam you for even thinking of a 300H&H when a 300WinMag is an infinetly better choice. And of course you know doubt expected me to say something about the 35. I know, I'm not being as supportive as I could be, I mean I could tell you to get a proper rifle in a proper caliber....hmmm BAR in 338WM sounds good, or a nice bolt in 300WM, but hey, its the seventh day of Christmas, so for you I will be nice.

Take the 35, its your pet fav, so enjoy it, and make the most of it. But next time you make this post, for my sake, leave out "Remington", "35", "Whelan", "Leupold" and "Pump".

You know, you could get a bolt 35.... just a hint :)
 
The 35 Whelen would be an interesting caliber to shoot in Yukon since it can shoot heavier bullets than the 300 H&H as well as being fired from a faster handling, pump gun.

The 300 H&H will, as you already know, handle any game in the Yukon. How about bringing them both along for this important hunt ?

your .35 has a clip? really want to risk a yukon moose hunt on a lost clip?

out of your options the .300 H&H seems the safe bet.
 
If that M700 Classic was chambered in .35 Whelen, you're choice would be obvious :) But it's not so take the .300 H&H. And as far as bullet selection, for a once-a-decade hunt, go with Nosler Partitions or Trophy Bonded bullets. The TBBC's aren't cheap with .308" 180gr Bear Claws at Wholesale Sports retail for $38.99 per 25 :eek: but they don't fail and stay together no matter what they encounter during penetration. Cheap insurance :rolleyes: ...KF

375H&H has been sold (to pay for 300H&H :D )

Yes ............... the 7600 has a removable mag, but I have four of them, so losing one is no big deal. Besides, I've never lost a mag in over 20yrs of using them.

I like boltguns just as much as the pumps. I'll see how the 300 shoots this summer and go from there, but I'm leaning towards the 35.

Bring the 35,most shots up here are under 200 yards.I know a few people who hunt here with 35 cal,358 win. to 358 norma and they get the job done with no problem.As far as losing your clip, here you can carry the clip in your rifle when you are hunting in a vehical or a boat just as long as you don't have one down the tube.Big bullets for big moose.250 grain Speers work as good as any other bullet.I have shot dozens of moose with my 358 Norma and 250 Speers,the range dosen't seem to matter they all end up weighing about 170 grains.
 
35 Whelan

SC i know the 35 whelen is got to be one of your favorite big game guns, if not of the two that is the one i would take, 250gr at 2500fps on a yukon moose pretty good medicine. Take care and have fun John.

I would hunt with the 300 because I just prefer the simplicity of a bolt gun,especially where there is a chance of a grizzly encounter.I would try the 180gr tsx.
