Which gun would you take?

I would hunt with the 300 because I just prefer the simplicity of a bolt gun, especially where there is a chance of a grizzly encounter.I would try the 180gr tsx.

You've goy lots of time to become familiar with the H&H bolt gun. That would be my choice but I've never had much appeal for pump or semi-auto hunting rifles.

I think a Yukon moose hunt just screams for a classy old cartridge out of a nice bolt rifle. The 300 H and H does it for me. Ultra cool and more than effective enough

But SC, next time pls give me something to consider other than a Remington :p Luck!

Who are you going hunting with? That could make a BIG difference! :D

Can they shoot if you mess up? What rifle will they be carrying? :p

What if you get lost? Which gun is easiest to carry in case you have to walk out eighty miles?

Which rifle is the prettiest? What will it look like after riding around in the bottom of a canoe for ten days?

What if you have to use it to break ice on the lake? Which one has the hardest butt pad?

How many shots will it take to kill a big Yukon bull moose if it gets mad? Which rifle holds the most shells without reloading!

Oh, my, my, my, this is not easy . Do you lie awake at night dreaming these questions up? :)

Sincerely,
Ted

PS: Isn't there something else you could bring that won't hurt so much? Do you have a 243?

Both are perfectly adequate for moose, I know lots of guys will dissagree with me, but I tend to think of a pump rifle as a shortrange bush gun, say for whitetails over hounds.

I'm going hunting with some old geezer with a junker Sako in 375H&H. As far as I know he CAN shoot, but I've never seen him do it. Just hearsay :D

If I have to walk out eighty miles, I'll have to carry alot more than my rifle. I'll have to pack out the geezer as well :D

The 7600/35W will hold one more in the mag than the 700/300H&H :)

Wouldn't a 243 be better for a wolf hunt than moose. I could always bring my 257Roberts (girly gun) if we are going to hunt wolves instead of moose. :D

35 Whelen is my new favorite moose cartridge (used the 250gr Speer this year on my moose). Both will kill moose as well as the other out to 400yds... but of course you already knew that.

Bring the one that you are most familiar (comfortable) with, and of course, the one you care the least to see rusted and scratched at the end of the trip.

I'd go with the 35 Whelen - you'd be better prepared for any possible grizzly encounters, you're very familiar with the rifle and the round as you've indicated, you've shot it alot and have much confidence in it.

What's not to like about the 35 Whelen?

The 300 H&H does not have most of these attributes at the present time for you, but might, if you can spend the same length of time and effort prior to your anticipated moose hunt.
