which guns to bring on a moose hunt?

4 guns on a trip is a problem? I carry 3 in my truck when I'm not hunting....

Bring the 300wm with a couple of different bullet weights if you want something lighter for the deer, and the .22 for the grouse. I'd much rather shoot a bear with a .300 than with a slug. Smaller hole in my rug and I don't have to see the teeth up close.

Personally, I've hunted deer, moose and black bear all with my .270WSM. Sure I've had to be more patient with the moose with only a 150 grain bullet, but it still ended up on the wall.

A 22 Rimfire for grouse, my 35 Whelen for the moose, and a 270 or 6.5 for deer, once the moose is on the ground!! Obviously, the 35 will work for deer also, but I sometimes get a shot over 400 on muleys, so the 35 is a wee bit handicapped out that far. Regards, Eagleye.

You could just bring a few reduced loads for your 300 for the small stuff. a 100gr Hornady SJ over a light 4895 load for birds and small stuff, and use the full-tilt loads for deer, bear, moose, and everything else.

I've been using a 7mm Remmag for moose but once the moose are down or I'm just hunting deer I switch to 25-06.

I have a Win Mod12 12 gauge 20" barrel for grouse in a scabard on the quad.

I just bought a 300WM so I'll be using that this year I think for moose. Why well I had $400 that king Ralph sent me and I Had to buy another gun and I've never owned a 300WM :) now I do

I'll use whatever rifle I happen to have for grouse. Just shoot for the head.
I've even taken them with the 338WM. (Aim too low with that, and the bird will disintegrate) The 45-70 actually works quite well. I even worked up a round ball load for it. Same for the 30-30.

I'm waaaay too paranoid about someone getting into the truck while we're out hunting and making off with my extra rifles and I'm sure as hell not going to lug 3 or 4 rifles along with me on a hike. We camp in an outfitters tent so leaving them in camp isn't an option (again, too paranoid about them getting ripped plus the whole storage thing when not in camp).

I carry my .30-06 (this year it'll be a new .270 Wby), buddy carries his .280 Rem and one beat up single shot .410 sits in the rig for chickens we happen to drive up on to or from camp.

If I am driving a considerable distance from home to hunt,I take two rifles that are suitable for the largest game that I will be hunting.Anything can happen to a rifle or scope and I need my spare rifle to be able to kill any game that I may encounter. As such,I carry two 300ultramags on my moose and elk hunts.

I guess you've never had someone drop a chicken around a corner just as you were lineing up on a swamp donkey or elk and had the dam thing book it for the trees and disappear

Our hunting party does not ever shoot grouse while hunting big game for this very reason. We don't drive 8 hours to hunt elk and moose, then risk spooking one in order to kill a grouse.

So, I am going moose hunting this season. beside my moose gun (300WM) I usually bring a shotgun in case we run by a grouse or two.
This year we can shoot moose, bear, deer, and what have you.
I'd rather shoot the grouse with .22, the bear with slug, the deer with lower caliber rifle.

So, 4 guns to bring on the hunt, does not make too much sense.

What would you do?

if i was travelling a long distance to hunt, i would take 2 moose capable rifles, one with scope, one without, to use on the moose, deer, and bear (one to use and one for backup in case of something going wrong with the first rifle or use the unscoped rifle in case of fog/rain/snow) and a .22 for grouse.

i wouldn't bother packing a smaller rifle for deer. after all, who would want to find a moose or elk with a .243 in hand when they have a 300 mag back in camp?

I would take your moose rifle and a 12ga. If something happens to your moose gun, at least you have some sort of backup. A 12ga shotgun is a great multipurpose tool.

Be aware of the extra convenient 410 backpacker. I used it with great success on grouse. Easy to pack, light......
BUT : it is LOUD!!!!! after huting 5 of the grouse (limit), I got 4 ATVs coming my way, all guys swearing that that was their partner's signal with a 7Rem mag and 300 UM, respectively.
Who in their right mind sets a signal of 6 shots with an ultramag?

I was half deaf for a month and I never regained complete hearing in left ear. (I tried to find the earplugs, but they were tied around my neck... the only place I didn't fumble to find them in a hurry.)
