Which hunting rifle do you love to hate?

Just a note bout the 30-06. They were designed in 1906 to kill calvary horses. A few improvements and many years later the grand old 06 is still here and the Calvary has been defunct for since the last charge somewhere in the philipines during 1943 (if I recall).

There isn't any rifle I wouldn't take for free if legally possible. There are a few that would be sold rather quickly after being relieved of optics rings and bases. Or possibly kept for the times i take out new hunters and don't want to hand them a nice gun.....

I wouldn't keep indefinitely:

Rem 710 or 770

anything 22 hornet, expensive to shoot as compared to a 223 or 22-250 and hard to reload accurate loads for.

anything 30-40 krag

Anything with alot of recoil in a Browning A-Bolt. The stock doesn't allow much muzzle jump and that delivers it to the shooter. I've owned a 7mm STW in a composite stock.

The 25WSSM's are no gem, they can be very accurate if you get one with a good barrel, but that second round will jam most times unless you cycle that bold very quickly(at least in a Win 70 super shadow).

That is about it.

I find the 270 bashing very amusing, it's usually guys that swear by the 7mm Rem Mags, the 270 is a fine round I prefer other rounds myself, but it has alot of merit.

I have owned rifles in these chamberings:

22lr
223
22-250
243
257 wby
264 win
270 win
7mm Rem, STW
308
30-06
300 win
300 wby
30-378wby
8mm Mauser
375 ICL Kodiak(H&H improved)
44 rem mag

Still love and use the 257 wby and 375 ICL. Alot of the others have been sold

LOL I own a Tikka T3 Lite in 30/06 and shoots absolutely spectacular even with chitty burris glass. Also a brand new rem 700 sps in 223 the action is extremely smooth and shoots less then a inch at 100. The gun doesnt really make the difference, its the shooters personal likes/dislikes and how he/she invidually fits the firearm.
Cheers

My worst ever was my first ever. A Midland 30-06. Made by Parker Hale but such poor quality that PH wouldn't put their own name on it and hence the Midland name was born....

Chamber was slightly oval and misaligned with the bore. Misfired almost 50% right out of the box because of a weak firing pin spring. Best group I shot was 4 inches at 100 yds, and 6-8" was more the norm. Trigger, bedding, crown, and safety were all less than good from new and i spent way to much $$$ on gunsmiths trying to make it shoot.

On the positive side it taught me far more about rifles, reloading, and shooting than any rifle since. A very happy day was when i traded it on a win mod 70 that tattooed a 1" group on the target the first time i tried it.

As gunnuts, we enjoy playing with and trying out different guns or we would just be another Joe Average with a .22, .303 and a single shot 12ga. But the majority of us aren't that boring (thank God) and most CGN'rs tend to favor certain brands and models. But there are some guns that for one reason or other (or several) we wouldn't own if someone even gave it to us (or accept it then flog it ) So which hunting rifle is your pick? For me it would have to be those Tikka t3 lites. I have tried several at the range and although they shot well, I wouldn't own one. They feel like a cheap plastic toy made by Mattel and are just plain fugly to look at. Tikka has produced some fine, quality rifles but dropped the ball when they made the el cheapo t3 (the lowly SKS has more appeal :p) So which hunting rifle do you love to hate? :stirthepot2:

Any rifles with synthetic stock .And I love to hate the way you made fun of my Tikka.

I hate Savage and Mossberg centre fire rifles. Some of them are shooters, but they just look cheap and flimsy to me. Whenever I see one of my buddies carrying one, I try to compliment them on the colour of their rifle.

A couple weeks ago, I was at the range. The guy beside me was shooting an old M70 sporter in 220 Swift, from the early 1950's. Beautiful rifle. I assumed he had great taste in rifles.

Then he pulled out his pet deer rifle...you guessed it. An A-Bolt! :puke:
