Which is a better rifle?

Ruger 77 or the Weatherby S2?
Have one of each in 308win.
Only need one.

The Ruger is used and a bit tricked out.

The S2 is new on one of them, "couldn't resist" deals.
Keep'em both and shoot'em both. I'm sure you will come to a conclusion. Let the guns decide for you.

Is the Vanguard one of the phlamo $399 jobs?

Keep the 77 and sell me the S2 :)

Maybe I could?

Yes.

Ya I'm with supercub on this. Your in a position to shoot both and tell us what your reasons where for keeping that particular rifle.

I'd be inclined to keep the Ruger, but why choose? Keep em both.

Just way too much logic here..............:runaway:

I was sent awn a mission to do an errand fer a feller gunmutters and seen one of these on display.
Price raised me eyebrows and as luck wood have it, there was the kerch$ng in me wallitt.
A while back I purchased an S2 in the 257WM and it just flabbergastitted me with accuracy.
Tossed some rounds together, screwed down a Zeiss and went to the range.
Kupple adjustment shots and then out to the 100 yard target.
Clover leaf.
Skeered the heck right owtta me.........................:bigHug:

So with this experience behind me, I tawt maybe lightening wood strike twice?

I'm out of spare scopes, but have lots of rings.
Sent two scopes into Trace and it will be a while yet.

Dang, hate the tawt of having to fork out $$ to play with a new gun that I may sell.

Butt wait, used is always werth mawr dan new.............huh?

An opportunity for me to post a pic of the only thing to steal my heart besides my wife and daughter. M77 in 308. Prints a 3/4" group at 100m with some factory ammo. Fits me like a glove.

Now there's a rifle that looks like its been there and done that! A stock with a finish worn from use not abuse has its own beauty, but a touch of 320 grit and a little boiled linseed oil wouldn't hurt . . . and it smells good. Really though, that is what a wood stocked rifle should look like.

Those Weatherby's are decent accurate rifles, but given the choice I'd probably pick the Ruger providing the accuracy is comparable (I prefer the Ruger M77 Mauser style action to the Howa made Weatherby actions).

Paint the flame stock or get a Boyds Laminate stock and the S2 is good to go. Keep them both or sell me the Ruger. ;)

They are both nice rifles, I had a Vanguard 308 WIN and have played with the Ruger M77 MKII, and between the two it comes down to user preference. Do you prefer CRF, keep the Ruger. I did find the two stage trigger on the Vanguard to be quite nice, better than the typical Ruger. I also find some of the Rugers are a bit rough feeling, but that depends on the specific rifle. So 6 of one, half dozen of the other :)

I have both as well. Really like the rugers for a solid all round gun built to last. The S2 is really well built as well but I would have to say the S2 will be more accurate from my experience and not by a bit. Most accurate rifle I have owned is a S1 backcountry that shot a .277" three shot group and constantly shoots .5" to .75" with most any load. Not one of the four vanguards I own cannot shoot a half inch group. Most rugers I own are around an inch. Love em both

Well 'Looky, I'm going to go against the general flow here and say the S2 is a better built rifle and will likely end up being the more accurate of the two. The Howa (Vanguard S2) is a machined steel action as opposed to Rugers cast steel action, I personally like the slightly heavier barrel on the S2 and I prefer the trigger assy on the S2 compared to the Ruger. Given the supposed market value of the two I'd sell the Ruger and keep the S2, that way you can get your purchase price of your S2 back and have enough left over to put a decent scope on it.

YUP Me too ! Keep the S2 and turf the Ruger ! RJ

hmmm, controlled push feed versus drop em in and throw the bolt home...........positive extraction and ejection versus possible extraction and ejection....I can see the dilemma.....

Send me the S2 and I'll send you a remington 788 with detachable mag, I know you prefer the detachable mag, and I need the cheek weld of a weatherby stock to ensure constant eye location in me scope, win win other then I prefer stainless for my parts of the world, and the flame pattern may blend itself into some of our newly cleared forest areas that were destroyed this summer

You have obviously never used a weatherby. They are not fancy, but they are definatly going to give you sub moa groups with half decent ammo and some skill behind the trigger. Heck my vanguard in 223 gives me sub moa groups with everything i feed her, including the cheap federal ar ammo.

Honestly neither are going to be tack driver hard pressed to get 1.5 inch groups if you do good luck
neither are particular good rifles
they shoot that's about it
