Which is a better rifle?

One thing I haven't noticed anyone mention is the safety on both rifles. Both are 3 position but the Howa safety is basically a piece of stamped metal and imho not nearly the quality of the Ruger. I also find the Ruger safety easier to operate with gloves on. Really the safety is the only complaint I have about my daughters Vanguard. It's an otherwise nicely made rifle.

Very good points here except that one dude.

I would keep the ruger if it has a wood stock and good memories - Fudd appeal if you may.

Keep the S2 if you want to balance the books and put meat in the freezer.

I have owned and still own some of each. I liked my old flat-bolt Ruger 77 so much that I wore out the barrel [6mm Remington]

I have since rebarrelled it and continue to enjoy it. [same chambering]

At present I have 4 Weatherby Vanguards, 2 S1's and 2 S2's. They are just great rifles. [except for the factory triggers on the S1 rifles]
My S1 in 270 will cloverleaf with, not just one, but 3 different loads I have tried.

My S1 in 300 WSM is much the same. The S2 in 30-06 is astonishingly accurate with both 165 and 180 grain bullets, and the 150 GMX/Ramshot Big Game load will make a ragged hole with 5 at 100M.
The S2 in 338 Win Mag shoots 1 moa or less with the 210 Partition, the 210 Scirocco II, the 225 Partition or Accubond, and the 225 Hornady FBIL. What is not to like?

I say keep the Vanguard. It is likely to be the best shooter, but it will depend. Some of those Rugers are very accurate also. [Particularly the Mark II actions]

Regards, Dave.

Looky,

I've actually shot edible stuff with the Ruger M77 MK II and they are the bomb. I like the wing safety best of all and they are very easy (as previously noted) to operate with gloves on. It's cold here in November when the steaks are wandering around on the hoof. Keep the Ruger, man. :)

Personally I would go with the S2. Howa makes excellent barreled actions for Weatherby. I have one in 300Wby and it shoots 1.5" groups at 300yds. Not bad for a factory rifle. I agree the safety is a bit simple but the trade off is accuracy. I like the older style Ruger M77, & MKII's. Not real big on the new Hawkeye series.

Your post # 8 is a pretty ridiculous statement, but you topped it with post # 47.
Thanks for contributing nothing to an otherwise very good thread...

Which Is The Better Rifle thread reminds me of the question my wife asked me "Does this dress make me look fat?" No matter how you answer you'll never be right.

I will get my resume together asap and send it straight away...

P.S - what position am I competing for again? What's it pay?

The one time my wife asked me "do these jeans make my ass look fat?", I answered:

"Quite the opposite."

She never got it.

Fire three shots from each: Best Group
Most comfortable
Slickest action/Best functionality/Looks (less important unless you are vain on the range)
Looks (less important unless you are vain on the range)

Pick the one that scores highest out of the bottom two unless the group spread is a foot apart on 100.

In the end ye gartz ta pick won, or in the spirit of CGN, keep em both.

hoytcannon is just a confused teenager that don't even own any firearms, nor has ever owned any firearms, nor has at anytime gone hunting. He use copy and paste for every comment.

Everyone on this forum knows that.
